DIY Cutting Board Supplies:

Really, it’s that simple! I’ll answer some questions about the project.

Where to Buy Ceramic Tile for the Cutting Board

I purchased a sample ceramic tile from my local home improvement store. The tiles also come in 18″ x 18″, so you have an option.

The tiles also come in many colors and designs to easily match any decor or style.  I chose this tile because of its marble look.

Slate Tiles As a DIY Chalkboard

The slate tiles, however, make for a stunning cheese cutting board and you can write on them with chalk! Speaking of slate, if you choose slate or a tile with a porous surface, you do need to prepare the surface with food-safe mineral oil. Then, as long as you wash your tile between uses and keep them clean, they are food safe.  Like any plate used for serving food, no slate or tile is food-safe if it is not properly cleaned between uses.

Cheese Cutting Board Instructions

It almost seems silly to me to write these instructions out because they really are very simple. I used these round adhesive felt pads. The felt pads come in a variety of shapes and sizes. You can purchase these at your local home improvement store, discount store, craft store or even online.

  1. Be sure to clean the area where the felt pads will be applied to ensure it is free of dust.
  2. On the back side of the tile, apply the felt pad to each corner.

That’s it! Two items, two steps and you have just made a DIY cutting board from ceramic tile! After I applied the felt to the ceramic tile, I turned the tile over and placed a bottle of laundry detergent (anything heavy will work) on top of the tile to help the adhesive obtain a secure grip onto the tile.

How does a cutting board made from ceramic tile last?

I’ve been using my DIY cutting board from ceramic tile for a few months now and it works perfectly. I actually just leave the board setting out on the counter so it is always accessible.  My husband loves cheese, so if I leave the board sitting out where he doesn’t have to look for it, he’s more likely to use it.

Give the DIY Cutting Board As a Gift

You know, if you put this ceramic tile cheese cutting board in a basket with some artisan crackers, smoked cheese and a nice bottle of wine and maybe even a couple of wine glasses, you’ve got quite a nice little gift basket for a wedding shower gift.

For Mother’s Day, you could easily add some fine chocolates, paired with a bottle of mom’s favorite wine, a new book and maybe a couple of candles and you’ve got a perfect Mother’s Day gift.

These coasters are made from ceramic tile, mod podge, felt and a waterproof sealant. The perfect DIY decor accessory or handmade gift!

By the way, this project is a great companion project to the How to Make Coasters from Ceramic Tiles project I shared here on Kenarry last month!

Handmade gift ideas just don’t get much easier than this, not to mention it’s mess-free and costs less than $5! My husband and I aren’t big wine drinkers (for health reasons), but about once a year we like to stop at a new vineyard and taste their wines. We especially love the wine pairings with chocolates. It’s amazing how the perfect wine brings out the perfect flavors in chocolate.

  1. You should never cut on a glass or ceramic surface with good knives. This is a great way to dull your knives quickly! I know they look great and are durable and non porous but you really should never cut on them. They do however make great serving trays!
