One Room Challenge: Week Five

Welcome friends! Perhaps you’ve been following along on our boys outer space bedroom transformation as part of the One Room Challenge hosted by Linda from Calling It Home? If not, let me take a second to fill you in.

Twice a year, Linda encourages bloggers to transform a room and then challenges them to document their process over six weekly posts. Each week the bloggers provide updates on their progress while also sharing ideas, tips, and resources.

We’re nearly the end, which is when this really gets interesting. You can join in the fun by surfing across participating blogs to see their progress this week. You’ll get to see how the rooms are shaping up, who’s running into roadblocks and more. You can also follow along on social media by searching for the hashtag #oneroomchallenge.

One Room Challenge So Far

Here’s a quick rundown on what we’ve shared so far:

Our room transformation is nearly done and I cannot wait to share the big reveal with you next week, so you can see how all the parts, pieces, and projects we’ve shared thus far come together for an out of this world bedroom for our boys.

As we prepare for next week’s reveal, I wanted to take a moment to tell you about all the extra little details going into this room for outer space bedroom decor and closet organization.

Outer Space Bedroom Decor

After the hard work of painting any room is done, it’s really fun to start decorating the space. Over the last several months, I’ve been gathering outer space bedroom decor and ideas to use in the boys room. Today we’re sharing a little peek at the details you’ll see in next week’s room reveal along with the sources of where we found each item.

1.) Comforter Set

We ordered two of the twin sized MI Zone Switch Comforter Sets from Kohls for the boys’ beds. The boys probably would have preferred a Star Wars comforter set. But I really liked how the base color was navy and dark like the walls, so the focus when you enter the room is on the walls more than the bedding.

The set comes with one standard pillow sham and a throw pillow. The bright colors and futuristic design tie in really nicely with the NASA posters we have for the boys walls.

2.) Star Wars Sheet Set

The boys’ bedroom is one of the coldest rooms in our house so I was thrilled when I found these Star Wars Flannel Sheets at Kohl’s. They’re so warm, cozy and soft. Plus these sheets help to make up for not going with the Star Wars comforters.

As we move into the summer months though, I need to keep my eyes out for lighter weight Star Wars sheets for the boys beds.

3.) R2D2 Throw Pillows

When I saw this square R2D2 throw pillow at Kohl’s, I just knew we needed two of them for the boys beds. The colors and style go great with the comforter set.

4.) Dust Ruffle / Bedskirt

The oldest son has storage drawers under his bed, so we only needed one bed skirt for the little brother’s bed. We just went with a twin ivory colored bedskirt from Bed, Bath and Beyond. It has a simple tailored look so it covers the box spring without drawing any extra attention.

5.) Other Bedding

We bought pillows for the boys’ beds at Costco. Since our boys are prone to nose bleeds, we also ordered waterproof pillow protectors on Amazon.

The pillows weren’t expensive, but the pillow protectors will at least make it quicker and easier to clean up any problems in the middle of the night. Our youngest is only three and just recently potty-trained so we also got a waterproof mattress cover for his bed. The one we picked says it’s breathable. We like that it isn’t crunchy and hard like some vinyl mattress covers can be.

6.) Contemporary Lamp

I found this Contempo Table Lamp from Pacific Coast Lighting on clearance at a local furniture store and thought it would be perfect outer space bedroom decor for the boys’ room. It’s tall enough to provide a lot of ambient light and sturdy enough to withstand two small boys.

Unfortunately, it’s been discontinued, but here are a few others from Pacific Coast Lighting that I think would fit well in an outer space bedroom:

If you’re looking for a lower cost lamp, I also like this Silver Leaf Hammered Metal Cylinder Table Lamp for about half the price of the others. This Solar System Sport Silver Lamp is also very cute for around $40.

7.) Headboard, Mattress Set, and Bed Frame

We already had a twin bed in the room for our oldest but needed to order one for our three-year-old so we could move him out of the crib.

We bought the mattress and box spring for him at Jonathan Stevens, a local mattress manufacturer here in Michigan. We also bought a Leggett & Platt twin bed frame at Jonathan Stevens (here’s the same bed frame on Amazon).

Later though we realized we can just use the bed frame from a full-sized bed we have downstairs so we’ll return the other one back to Jonathan Stevens. We also purchased the twin-sized Richmond Headboard by Atlantic Furniture in espresso to attach to the bed frame. We liked it because it got great reviews online and the style would coordinate well with the other twin bed in the room.

Amazon also sells a version of this bed with storage drawers, which would have made it even more similar to the other twin bed that’s already in the room. We didn’t go with that one though because we have a small dresser that we used as a changing table in the nursery that we’ll be moving into this room and didn’t need the extra storage under the second bed.

8.) Globe

Our oldest son who’s almost six is absolutely enthralled by maps. A few years ago, he received an Oregon Scientific Smart Globe for Christmas. It’s become one of his favorite toys and will look great next to the contemporary lamp on the dresser in the outer space bedroom.

9.) NASA Posters

Several weeks ago, we shared how we found free NASA posters online and got two of them printed using The Big Picture capability at Minted. They’re going to look amazing on the wall above each of the boys’ beds.

10.) Glow-In-The-Dark Stars

We originally bought a set of glow-in-the-dark stars at our local dollar store. They were made with thick plastic and had little double sided sticky tape disks to stick them to the ceiling. We tested it out with one and by morning the star was on the floor.

Instead we ended up getting these Twinkle Stars from Great Explorations at Michael’s. They’re sparkly and a little thinner than the ones from the dollar store. They come with a putty to affix them to the ceiling which seemed to work much better when we tested it.

Closet Organization

Combining the boys into the one bedroom presents some additional organizational challenges, like what do you do with all their clothes and stuff?

Up until now, our three-year-old has been across the hall in a nursery with his own closet and the small dresser/changing table I mentioned earlier in this post. The soon-to-be six year old has drawers under his bed that hold most of his clothes:

Boys bedroom plans involve removing the Curious George decal and painting the walls including a outer space theme mural.

His closet was a big mess and completely under utilized. The two shelves near the top were packed with bins of toys with small parts that we wanted to keep out of reach of his little brother. Legos, a marble run, Knex – the kind of toys you don’t want to constantly find under foot.

The closet also contains clothes and shoes he’s either outgrown or needs to grow into as well as many large stuffed animals.

Boys bedroom plans include adding a closet organization system so small children can better reach their clothes.

1.) Move the Toys Out

The first step was to move all of the toys and stuffed animals across the hall into the nursery that we’re converting into a main floor playroom for the boys.

2.) Find An Organization System

Next, we started searching for closet organization systems that would make better use of the empty space. We specifically wanted to add shelves and lower clothes rack that the boys can reach without pulling over a stool or chair.

We looked at several different closet organization systems on Amazon. Most of those included more shelves and rails than we needed for the space. They also required permanent installation with tools and screws. Then we found this ClosetMaid Closet Maximizer:

The ClosetMaid Closet Maximizer works great for our boys closet. It’s relatively inexpensive compared to the other systems we were considering.

No tools are required for assembly. It just attaches by clipping to the regular closet rod or wire that you already have in place. The adjustable hanging rod can be positioned on either side of the shelf part to meet your needs.

The shelves are made of laminated wood and come in three colors, chocolate, dark cherry or white. We went with the chocolate one to coordinate with the furniture in the boys’ bedroom. We love how easy it was to install. It will also be really easy to remove down the road or to move to another closet if/when the boys needs change. Something like this would also work really well for someone who’s renting their home.

3.) Put Things Back In

With the ClosetMaid Closet Maximizer, we’re now able to make much better use of the space in the boys closet. The three-year-old especially loves that he can access his own clothes on the hanging rod. I just wish he didn’t think he needed to change his clothes three to four times a day.

4.) Use Bins and Boxes

The red and blue bins you see on the left in the photo below are for dirty clothes and are always overflowing now thanks to his desire to change every time he gets a speck or spot of anything on his clothes.

The cardboard boxes on the floor and upper shelves contain clothes that are in transition between the boys.

The shoes are organized in order of shoe size from smallest to largest and on a high shelf out of reach so the three year old doesn’t mix, match and mess them up any more. As the boys grow and their clothes get bigger, there’s still plenty of room left in the closet to accommodate both of them sharing it for a while.
