Create an easy tradition for your family with Spirited Star Waffles, a red, white and blue breakfast treat for Memorial Day, Independence Day or Labor Day.

Use strawberries and blueberries to dress up your breakfast. Your kids will love these super easy Spirited Star Waffles for Memorial Day, Independence Day or Labor Day.

One of the weekly routines at our house is “Wednesday Waffles.” On Wednesday mornings, we break out of our usual cereal habit to have something a little more special for breakfast. Most weeks, we just have simple freezer waffles with butter and syrup.

Around holiday times, though, we like to get a little crazy and add some excitement to our waffles. At Christmas time, we made our waffles into tree shapes and adorned them with candy ornaments. At Valentine’s Day, we shaped our waffles into hearts and added whipped cream and red sprinkles. It’s only fitting then for us to make Spirited Star Waffles as a perfect red, white and blue breakfast for Memorial Day. Of course, they’d also be great for Independence Day, Labor Day or any flag holiday this summer.

“Wednesday Waffles” is an easy way to create a tradition for your family. In the article, Creating a Positive Family Culture: The Importance of Establishing Family Traditions, Brett and Kate McKay offer 8 great reasons why traditions are beneficial for families. It may sound simple, but having regular weekly traditions like “Wednesday Waffles” can help:

  • Strengthen the family bond.
  • Offer comfort and security.
  • Add to the rhythm and seasonality of life.
  • Create lasting memories.

What you need:

  • Freezer waffles
  • Whipped cream in a can
  • Strawberries
  • Blueberries
  • Red, white and blue sprinkles

Instructions:

1. Toast the waffles.

This really needs no explanation. Just follow the instructions on the package.

2. Cut the waffles into stars.

You could do this yourself with a knife. However, we really like the Wilton Comfort Grip Star Cutter because of its extra large size. It also has a stainless steel blade and is dishwasher safe.

3. Outline the stars.

Use whipped cream in a can to emphasize the outline of the star and create the “white” part of the Spirited Star Waffles.

4. Fill the stars with fruit.

We filled in one of the Spirited Star Waffles with blueberries. For the other, we arranged sliced strawberries in a pinwheel formation.

 5. Sprinkle and serve.

I think sprinkles make everything more festive, don’t you? We topped our Spirited Star Waffles with red, white and blue sprinkles to give them a little holiday pizazz! We used Betty Crocker Red, White and Blue Sprinkles. However, later I found cute star shaped sprinkles from Dress My Cupcake. I may need to get those when we make Spirited Star Waffles again for the 4th of July!

My children were delighted by the Spirited Star Waffles. It was a really easy way of making our “Wednesday Waffle” tradition a little more special one week. What are some of your family’s favorite weekly traditions? Please comment below to share.

Enjoy the Spirited Star Waffles — and have a wonderful Memorial Day remembering the men and women who’ve fought so hard to maintain our freedom and our American spirit!
