It’s always fun to have something beautiful by your front door when friends and family come over for a visit. Some people hang seasonal wreaths or other outdoor decor directly on their front door. Before visitors even knock, this added little touch gives them a warm and friendly greeting.

At our house rather than hanging decor right on the door, we have a large empty space to the left of our front door.

Outdoor Decor - Big Empty Boring Space by Front Door

We’ve been slowly working on creating something different for each season to hang in that big empty boring space.  For Christmas, we have a faux evergreen wreath that includes ribbons, beads and other embellishments. This past winter, we created a big monogram letter “Y” on a grapevine swag to hang there after the holidays.

The past few summers, we’ve had a large orange polka dot and chevron burlap wreath hanging by our front door. This summer, I thought it would be fun to come up with something more coastal or nautical. While beach or nautical decor always makes me think of summer, I also wanted to coordinate with our inside decor this summer. Furthermore, I wanted to create something with the same teal and hot pink color scheme we used for our summer mantel decor and wall art.

When I was shopping for our new mantel decor, I came across a fantastic anchor made of driftwood. It was already wrapped with sisal rope, so all I had to do was embellish it with a few flowers and painted letters.

How to Make an Anchor Wreath

This Anchor Wreath is incredibly easy to make. You just need a few supplies and you can whip this together in under 30 minutes – now that’s my kind of crafty home decor!

What You Need:

NOTE: The craft store where we bought the letters, flowers and anchor didn’t have identical products available online, so we’ve included links to similar products on Amazon and Etsy for your convenience.

Instructions

1. Paint the letters.

Lay out your small wood letters to spell your desired greeting for the Anchor Wreath. The top bar on my driftwood anchor isn’t very wide so I kept the message short: HELLO.

Next I mixed DecoArt’s True BlueCanary (yellow) and Cotton Ball (white) Multi-Surface paints to form a rich teal color. Earlier this summer, I got this gorgeous Anchor and Fresh Crabs Wood Sign Set from The Summery Umbrella. I ordered it in aqua and tried my best to have my paint match the signs. (NOTE: If you love this sign set too, Kenarry readers get a special 20% off discount at The Summery Umbrella. Just use the promo code KENARRY when you check out.) I did two coats of paint on the front of each wood letter with ample dry time between coats.

2. Hot glue the wood letters.

Carefully put hot glue on the back of each letter and press it firmly on the cross bar of the Anchor Wreath.

Start with the middle letter and work your way out to the edges to get your message centered and spaced correctly.

3. Attach the flowers.

Use wire cutters, if necessary, to remove the stems from your artificial flowers. Apply hot glue liberally to the back of each flower.

Press the artificial flower to the front of the Anchor Wreath where you want it to go. I was able to press the stub of the stem down between a few of the driftwood pieces to help hold the flower in place.

4. Allow the hot glue to cool.

Within a few minutes the hot glue should be cool enough to hold the wood letters and flowers securely in place on the Anchor Wreath.

5. Hang the Anchor Wreath.

Our Anchor Wreath hangs on a nail in the three foot board and batten space to the left of our front door that I mentioned earlier.

If you want to hang the Anchor Wreath directly on your front door, there are numerous wreath hangers that I think would work. Because the Anchor Wreath is heavy, I would avoid using magnetic wreath hangers or suction cup wreath hangers for this one. There are some heavy duty wreath hangers that would be better for displaying this Anchor Wreath.

I just love the way this Anchor Wreath looks next to our front door. It’s the perfect size for that space and the driftwood gives it the coastal look I wanted for summer. Of course, you could also easily hang something like this indoors, if you prefer.

Now there you have a super easy and fast home decor idea you can throw together quickly this summer. Now your friends will love it when they come over for glass of wine or grilled meatloaf burger.
