Happy New Year, dear Kenarry friends!  It’s Robin from A Home To Grow Old In.  Can you believe that it’s time for another new year to start?

Baked chocolate glazed donuts recipe

Each year the hustle and bustle between Thanksgiving and Christmas causes this time of year to creep up on me.  You know what else creeps up on me?  My waistline!

A month of overindulging at family get-togethers and parties always has me looking for some healthier options.  Even though I’m trying to eat healthier, I still need to occasionally appease my sweet tooth, and today I’m sharing just the right chocolate glazed donuts recipe to do it.

Baked donuts are healthier than fried

One of the great things about these chocolate glazed donuts is that they are baked and not fried.  I wouldn’t go as far as to call them healthy, but they definitely are a lightened up version of the fried variety.

They are perfect for days when you need a chocolate fix but still want to watch your calories.  They are a bit like eating cake in a donut form, and who would pass that up for a special breakfast treat?

Another thing that I love about these donuts is that you can have them ready in no time at all.  They are very simple to make.  You basically just combine all your dry ingredients in one mixing bowl and your wet ingredients in another, then combine the two bowls.

To make it even easier on myself, I pour the batter into a gallon sized Ziploc bag, cut off the corner, and squeeze the batter into a donut pan.

How to Glaze baked donuts

For the glaze, just whisk all the ingredients together in a medium bowl.  Dip both sides of the donut in the glaze and allow to dry on a wire rack.

Once the glaze hardens they are ready to serve.  Or, just serve them right away with the glaze still dripping off…that’s how my kids like them.

  1. They look Delicious.
If you where to lay down newspaper, parchment paper or brown paper bag under your cooling rack before icing, you will have less mess to clean up . Just roll up the paper and throw away and no icing will be left on your counter top.
Also, using almond extract makes for a nice change in place of the vanilla.

      1. Great question, Colleen! I’ll ask Robin who created this recipe to chime in on it, but I would think you could use regular or fat free plain yogurt in place of the Greek yogurt. It might just change the thickness or the taste a little from her original recipe. Likewise, you could give sour cream a try. Or were you trying to avoid dairy altogether?

        Thanks for asking!

        Best wishes,
        Carrie

        1. Hi Colleen, I checked with Robin to get her thoughts. She said:

          “Hi there,

Sour cream works great but adds a lot of fat. If calories and fat isn’t a concern, that’s the way to go. Buttermilk also works well, and I think that is a slightly lower fat option (you can make your own buttermilk by adding vinegar to milk). I believe you could substitute the sour cream equally, but I’m not 100% on the buttermilk. I’m not sure about apple sauce in this recipe, but I’ve used it in others, and it has worked well. I would think applesauce would make it a little drier, though. Hope that helps!

          Best,
          Robin”

    1. Hi Colleen, those are great suggestions! I never think to put newspaper, parchment paper or brown paper bag under my cooling rack — that’s brilliant for any baking, but especially for icing donuts like these! Thanks for sharing your helpful ideas!

      Carrie
