Easter Craft Idea: Hand Painted Wine Glasses

Are you planning a special dinner for Easter this year? Or need a new craft to try for your girls’ night out this spring? Today we’ll show you how to create your own festive hand painted wine glasses as a DIY Easter craft idea.

DIY Hand Painted Glassware

Next to making burlap wreaths, painting wine glasses tops my list of favorite crafts to make. It’s really quite simple and easier than you’d expect. I first learned how to paint wine glasses a few years ago when friends threw me a surprise craft party for my birthday.

Since then, I’ve used the same glass painting technique to paint sets of wine glasses and appetizer plates, including a speckled metallic set for fall. I’ve also painted coffee mugs, wedding champagne flutes and even a Thanksgiving platter.

Over the years, I’ve found that you can really buy any inexpensive clear glassware and easily paint it! It’s great to make as DIY gifts for holidays and special occasions or to do at parties like a girls’ night out, bridal shower or other events. Crafting, wine, chocolate, and great friends… can it really get any more fun than that?

Easter Craft Ideas

Every spring, I try to think of a fun Easter craft idea to make as a hostess gift for my Aunt Ronda. My Uncle Bob and Aunt Ronda host my huge extended family for Easter and always go the extra mile to make our Easter traditions special.

A few years ago, I made her an Easter burlap wreath, of course since I love to make those. Then the following year I made her some Easter wine charms. So logically speaking, the obvious DIY gift to make her next was to paint a set of four Easter wine glasses, right?

How to Make Hand Painted Wine Glasses as an Easter Craft Idea

In this easy craft tutorial, we’ll show you techniques and ideas for how to make your own Easter Wine Glasses.

Craft Tools Needed:

Paint palette or small containers (Tip: after you’re done coloring Easter eggs, use the old egg carton as a paint palette.)
Small paint brushes
Cup of water for rinsing brushes
Oven, optional

First we’ll go through the easy five step process that I use every time I paint wine glasses. Then I’ll share the ideas and techniques I specifically used to paint the four Easter wine glasses in this set.

1. Prepare the glassware

Remove any stickers from the wine glasses. Wash and dry them thoroughly so you have a clean surface for painting. You may also need to use Goo Gone to remove any stickers.

2. Decide what kind of design you want to paint

For this set of Easter wine glasses, I wanted them to be fun and whimsical with distinctly different designs. When people are at your Easter dinner, they’re going to want to know at a glance which wine glass is theirs. Plus it would have been incredibly challenging and time consuming to try to replicate the exact same design across all four plates and glasses. There’s no way I could have made all four of them identical.

A safety precaution: With the wine glasses, it’s important to leave at least a half inch at the top of the glassware free of paint. While the gloss enamel paint is non-toxic, I don’t think you want your lips coming into contact with it regularly.

3. Paint your glassware

Painting wine glasses is so much fun and surprisingly easy to do. As with any craft, the hardest part is figuring out what you want your design to be and the paint colors you want to use on the wine glasses. But once you have an idea in mind, the rest comes easily.

You’ll see in the photos I used a variety of pastel paint colors for this Easter craft idea. However, I only listed red, yellow and blue gloss enamel craft paints for this project.

With these three primary colors and a paint palette, you can create ANY color you want. Use white or black gloss enamel paint to lighten or darken your colors as desired. Gloss enamel craft paint is the best paint to use on glass.

You can also paint the stem and base of the wine glass if you want. Just make sure you allow one color to dry before painting another color next to it so your paints don’t smear together.

4. Allow your Easter wine glasses to dry

You’ll likely need to use a few coats of paint to get the desired coverage you want on the Easter wine glasses. Be sure to allow enough time for your hand painted wine glasses to dry between coats or your paints will smear together.

TIP: You can also use a blow dryer to speed up the drying process.

5. Cure the paint on the hand painted wine glasses

The final step in the process is to cure or harden the paint on the Easter wine glasses. There are two methods for doing this:

Method 1: Air Dry. Let the Easter wine glasses air dry for 21 days.
Method 2: Bake in the Oven. Put the Easter wine glasses on a cookie sheet and place on a low rack in the oven. Heat the oven to 350 degrees. Bake the Easter wine glasses for 30 minutes. Turn the oven off and allow them to cool naturally with the oven before removing them. IMPORTANT: YOU MUST PUT THE HAND PAINTED WINE GLASSES IN THE OVEN BEFORE YOU TURN IT ON TO PREVENT THE GLASSES FROM BREAKING.

Once the paint has cured on your wine glass designs, they are top-rack dishwasher safe.

Easter Wine Glass Ideas

Now that you’ve got an overview of the process, I’ll share each of the 4 Easter wine glasses I made in closer detail so you can learn from what I did:

Easter Craft Idea 1: Make the Easter Bunny look like it’s hopping through the wine glass

Of the four Easter wine glasses, I have to admit that THIS one turned out to be my favorite! It has a bunny head on one side:

Then the bunny butt is on the other side like the Easter bunny is hopping through the wine glass. I started by painting two coats of white as the base for the bunny. For the bunny’s tail, I actually dabbed my paint on with the brush to give it more of a soft, cotton-y texture.

Next, I outlined the head and the tail with a black enamel paint pen so the face, the rabbit’s feet and other details would show. After that dried, I filled in a few spots with pink like the bunny’s ears, nose and the bottoms of his feet.

When my Aunt Ronda talks about all the things on her to do list to prepare for our family Easter festivities, she often says “Hop! Hop! Hop!” So I wanted to add that phrase to this glass too in purple, her favorite color. I put two on one side and one on the other side.

Then finally, I painted lots of brightly colored dots to fill the base of the wine glass and extended a few of the dots in a swirl around the stem.

Easter Craft Idea 2: Decorate with an Easter bunny and a Happy Easter message

For the next Easter wine glass, I wanted the focus to be on a big “Happy Easter” message on the side of the glass. I have a fairly steady hand and good handwriting, so I did my lettering freehand.

If you don’t trust your handwriting, you can print your message in a font you love and tape it to the INSIDE of the wine glass. Then you just use your brush to trace the letters on to the outside of the glass. (Look at this tutorial for an example where I did that.)

In addition, I painted a couple of small colorful Easter eggs on one side of this glass. I also painted small dots in a swirl pattern from the base of the glass, around the stem and up the top of the glass.

Lastly, I painted a small bunny rabbit on the side of the glass opposite of the “Happy Easter” message.

To create the bunny rabbit, I used the same technique as I did with the previous wine glass. I painted the base of the bunny in white. Once that paint dried, I outlined the rabbit shape and details with black enamel paint. Then finally I added a few pink accents.

Easter Craft Idea 3: Paint large colorful Easter eggs hiding in the grass

Two of the big highlights of our family’s Easter each year are coloring Easter eggs and hunting for plastic eggs in the yard. So that was my inspiration for this next Easter wine glass.

I started by painting just the top half of three Easter eggs around the sides of the glass. As I did so, I added more and more detail with each layer of paint until they were as colorful as I wanted them to be.

Then the next step was to create the grass to cover the base and stem of the wine glass.

Now, this is where I broke my “wait for paint to dry between layers” rule. I wanted the grass to have a textured appearance like real grass, so I created a couple different shades of green paint in my palette. I also added a little bit of yellow and just a tad blue.

Then using the same brush over and over again, I painted up the sides, stem and base of the grass dipping the brush in a different green shade each time. I used a very quick flick of my wrist at the top and bottom to give it the appearance like blades of grass.

Easter Craft Idea 4: Create beautiful spring flowers on your wine glasses

For the fourth and final Easter wine glass in this set, I created the top half of a single Easter egg on one side of the glass. Then I created a field of flowers on the other. I was going for the appearance of cheerful spring daisies and lavender.

Once I completed the blossoms for each flower, I painted a small stem leading up to each one. After that paint dried, I created blades of grass around the sides, the stem and the bottom of the wine glass just like I did with the previous one.
