This is Suzy from Suzy’s Sitcom, and I confess, I’m a huge fan of faux techniques. Wood burning is a craft that I have always wanted to try. Creating this little sign turned out to have a bit of a learning curve, as you will soon see, but the end result was worth the effort. I’ll go step by step through my experience and help you through some of the bumps that I found while using this new faux wood burning technique.

Oh, and I’ve included a free pattern for you to try this faux wood burning! I call it Eat Your Dessert First. Because we really should. It is totally my new mantra.

Deciding what to create is half the fun. I settled for this little sign, but the possibilities are endless. Wood burning or pyrography can be done on any wood surface and this faux technique is no exception. Be sure that you use untreated wood (lighter colored wood is best).

Instructions:

Life is Short Eat Your Dessert First written on a wood board in pencil.

1. sand the wood

For best results, it is important to properly prepare your wood surface. Use the sandpaper to sand the wood to a 220 grit, or very smooth. You will notice in the photo above that I chose wood that had been previously painted. I needed to sand all of that off in order to get the desired effect.

2. transfer the pattern

Transfer the pattern using your favorite method. You can use carbon paper if you like. My favorite method is to color the back of the pattern with charcoal or chalk, place it right side up over the wood, and trace the pattern. You can see more details on how to do it in this painted wood sign tutorial.

3. apply the design with the scorch marker

Shake the Scorch Marker until you can see the pink fluid filling the tip of the marker. Simply follow your lines and fill in when desired. Only a small amount of product is needed! You do not have to push down hard and retrace. A little goes a long way.

As the Scorch Marker dries, it is not as obvious. Don’t worry. The chemical in this marker works great! Once the whole pattern is drawn in with the Scorch Marker, it is time to do some faux wood burning!

4. apply heat to your design

Once you have completed your design, apply heat. The design will begin to darken and burn into the wood! The more heat you apply, the darker the design! This is best accomplished with a heat gun, but an oven can also be used (375 degrees F until the desired effect is achieved).

In the photo above, you can see where I’ve concentrated mainly on the bottom of the sign. I have to tell you that it was at this point that the smoke alarms went off in my house.

Yep, it truly is a form of wood burning! A bit of smoke will come off the wood when heated. Enough that your alarms may pick it up. It created quite a ruckus. Everyone came running to find out what I caught on fire. I was evicted to the outside in order to finish my project.

In order to get the dark lines shown above, it took about 15-20 minutes of heating with my heat gun, moving over the lines slowly. Less time in the heat makes for lighter lines.

5. add the finishing touches to your faux wood burning project

To get a bit of warmth, you can certainly add a bit of wood stain to your project to finish. Or you can always leave it with the natural wood look. Either way, this faux wood burning technique was a great success!
