One Room Challenge: Week Four
We’re now in Week Four of the One Room Challenge hosted by Linda from Calling It Home. Twice a year, she challenges bloggers to transform a room and document their process over six weekly posts. Be sure to check out how week four is going for other bloggers in the One Room Challenge and follow along on social media by searching for the hashtag #oneroomchallenge.
If you’re just joining us in our journey, we’re transforming our boys bedroom from a Curious George theme to an outer space motif. The entire outer space bedroom is inspired by free NASA posters we found online. We’ve also shared how we made a galactic paint change in the room from pale yellow walls to outer space gray.
This week is my favorite update thus far – how we created an outer space mural on the walls! I don’t often get the opportunity to paint creatively, but when I do I’m always reminded how much I truly love it. My mind gets wrapped up in that realm and it’s about all I can think about for days, like when I created the Castle Playroom under the stairs for our boys. For that project, I painted two murals: faux stone walls for the interior of the castle and an enchanted forest or woodland mural on the outside:
For the outer space mural in the boys bedroom, I thought I would keep things a little simpler. Rather than creating an elaborate galaxy system with planets and moons, stars, comets, asteroids etc. I decided to just paint a large cartoon-like rocket on one wall and then eight planets on the other walls. (I skipped painting Earth since I decided we’re standing on it looking up into the sky.)
Alright, so before we get lost in space, let’s take a quick look back at what we’ve done so far. We cleared out the room and painted the walls an outer space gray/blue color:
How to Paint an Outer Space Mural
You don’t have to be an artist to create an outer space mural on the walls in your home. In this tutorial, I’ll show you how easy it is to create an out of this world bedroom using DecoArt Americana Multi-Surface and Dazzling Metallic Paints.
What You Need:
- 6 foot folding ladder or work ladder
- Pictures of rocket clip art and planets for inspiration
- Post-it notes
- Pencil
- Round plates or bowls of various sizes
- 1 quart primer
- Paint brushes
- Cotton rags (an old t-shirt works great!)
- Small plastic containers for mixing paint
- Paint palette
- DecoArt Americana Multi-Surface Satin Acrylic Paints
- DecoArt Americana Multi-Surface Metallic Silver Paint
- DecoArt Dazzling Metallic Paints
Instructions:
1. Paint the base color. As I shared last week, we started by transforming the walls from pale yellow to a bolder, darker outerspace gray paint color.
Once the outer space paint on the walls was dry, I filled my favorite travel mug with coffee and gathered my supplies and inspirational materials to get to work. I printed pictures I found of rocket clip art and planets online and hung them with blue painter’s tape on the folding ladder and the closet doors for visual reference. I also kept the NASA posters close by so I could easily see them for color and design ideas.
I love the way the mural for the boys room came out amazing. I also like the castle theme under the stairs, Very creative. I know it must be relaxing for you! I love painting.
Maria
Thanks, Maria. I’m not sure if I’d call it relaxing as much as I’d call it energizing! I love to paint creatively like this.
This turned out SO cool! I bet he thinks it’s awesome!!! You did a fabulous job!
Thanks, Samantha. Both of my boys think it’s very cool too! (which is always a relief when your art critics are only 3 and 5 years old!)
Wow wow! It looks fab! What a cool idea. I don’t know if I’d have the guts to free-hand anything on a wall… Great job!
Thanks, Sarah! I just figured if it didn’t turn out, I could always paint over it!
Your mural paintings turned out so well, your son must be soo excited!
The boys are thrilled! Thanks, Katy.
That rocket is the cutest thing I’ve seen all week! Loving this!
Awwwww, thanks Jen! I’m so thrilled you like it.
I love how the planets turned out, and can definitely see how the metallic paint would work great to make them shiny. Now I wish I had some rooms to paint with cool murals too 🙂
Thanks so much, Nicole! I just wish the metallic paints photographed better. I love how they shine in the room and make the planets look different depending on where you’re standing and how the lights are reflecting on them.
First, I LOVE the wall color!!! (I must have missed last week… I’ll have to go have a look). The murals you painted are amazing! You’ve got some pretty lucky little boys!
Thanks, Erin! We love the new color too. So glad you liked the mural. Thanks for taking the time to come by and check it out.
This is so fun!! What lucky boys! I love this personal mural, and it looks like something even I could paint. The wall color came out amazing, too.
You really could paint this, April! It’s not hard at all – especially when you use plates and bowls as your pattern.
You are so talented, Carrie! I LOVE how the planets and the rocket ship turned out. Your boys are very lucky to have such a customized space created just for them!
You are so sweet, Jenny! Thanks for your support and encouragement. Hopefully the boys appreciate it too!
So cool! My son would love this. Thanks for joining the Family Joy Linky Party. 🙂
Thanks Samantha! So glad you came by to check out our outer space mural.
That is awesome! I wish you’d come decorate my daughter’s walls, too, lol!
If you lived in West Michigan, I’d totally offer to help, Emma! Enjoy decorating your daughter’s room.
I just created a mural for a nursery a while ago. This turned out nice!! Thanks for sharing at the #InspirationSpotlight party. Pinned & shared.
Isn’t it fun to make murals for children? Thanks for visiting us, Theresa!
