One Room Challenge: Week Four

We’re now in Week Four of the One Room Challenge hosted by Linda from Calling It Home. Twice a year, she challenges bloggers to transform a room and document their process over six weekly posts. Be sure to check out how week four is going for other bloggers in the One Room Challenge and follow along on social media by searching for the hashtag #oneroomchallenge.

If you’re just joining us in our journey, we’re transforming our boys bedroom from a Curious George theme to an outer space motif. The entire outer space bedroom is inspired by free NASA posters we found online. We’ve also shared how we made a galactic paint change in the room from pale yellow walls to outer space gray.

This week is my favorite update thus far – how we created an outer space mural on the walls! I don’t often get the opportunity to paint creatively, but when I do I’m always reminded how much I truly love it. My mind gets wrapped up in that realm and it’s about all I can think about for days, like when I created the Castle Playroom under the stairs for our boys. For that project, I painted two murals: faux stone walls for the interior of the castle and an enchanted forest or woodland mural on the outside:

For the outer space mural in the boys bedroom, I thought I would keep things a little simpler. Rather than creating an elaborate galaxy system with planets and moons, stars, comets, asteroids etc. I decided to just paint a large cartoon-like rocket on one wall and then eight planets on the other walls. (I skipped painting Earth since I decided we’re standing on it looking up into the sky.)

Alright, so before we get lost in space, let’s take a quick look back at what we’ve done so far. We cleared out the room and painted the walls an outer space gray/blue color:

Instructions:

1. Paint the base color. As I shared last week, we started by transforming the walls from pale yellow to a bolder, darker outerspace gray paint color.

Once the outer space paint on the walls was dry, I filled my favorite travel mug with coffee and gathered my supplies and inspirational materials to get to work. I printed pictures I found of rocket clip art and planets online and hung them with blue painter’s tape on the folding ladder and the closet doors for visual reference. I also kept the NASA posters close by so I could easily see them for color and design ideas.

    1. Thanks, Samantha. Both of my boys think it’s very cool too! (which is always a relief when your art critics are only 3 and 5 years old!)

  2. I love how the planets turned out, and can definitely see how the metallic paint would work great to make them shiny. Now I wish I had some rooms to paint with cool murals too 🙂

    1. Thanks so much, Nicole! I just wish the metallic paints photographed better. I love how they shine in the room and make the planets look different depending on where you’re standing and how the lights are reflecting on them.
