Our oldest son recently turned five years old. Ever since his fourth birthday, he’s been talking about how he wants a “Puzzingo” birthday when he turns five. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Puzzingo, he’s a clown character on an iPad game with the same name. As the name implies, it’s a puzzle game where your child can slide squares around on the screen to complete a picture puzzle. I went along with the idea figuring what four year old would actually remember when the next birthday rolls around?

Apparently my son has the memory on a elephant as he did not forget about this idea. Whenever we talked about his fifth birthday, he told anyone who would listen how he’s going to have a Puzzingo birthday. People always looked at him like he had two heads when he’d make this proclamation. Puzzingo is not a popular cartoon character. You can’t find cute trinkets and stickers with his picture on it. There is no mass merchandising of Puzzingo the way there is with other popular iPad games. This meant we had to get a little creative when it came time to think about what to bring for my son’s birthday treat at preschool.

We racked our brains for months and finally decided a puzzle theme would make perfect sense since the whole video game was about puzzles. His preschool friends wouldn’t be able to relate to Puzzingo the clown, but they would know and appreciate puzzles. One trip to the dollar store and we found some amazing blank “Color Your Own Puzzles (You can also find the puzzles on Amazon). We also found packs of 8 ct crayons in bulk as a set of four at the dollar store. We used green ribbon to attach everything together along with a little printable we made about how their friendship fits like a puzzle. My son and his classmates were thrilled – and so was I! The Puzzle Party Favors only cost about $1.25 each to create since I already had card stock and ribbon in my stash of craft supplies.

2. Cut and punch the tags for the Puzzle Party Favors.

Cut the tags apart. For straight lines, I’d suggest using a paper trimmer. It’s so fast and easy that I can’t go back to just cutting tags apart with scissors anymore!

Next, I used a simple hole punch in the corner so I could easily tie the tags onto the Puzzle Party Favors.

3. Tie the tags on the Puzzle Party Favors.

To keep your tag facing forward on your Puzzle Party Favors, fold the ribbon in half, put the loop through the hole in the tag, then pull the end through the loop as shown in the photo below.

Next slide one end of the ribbon through the crayon box and the puzzle to attach them together. Later my son actually asked that we add fruit snacks to the Puzzle Party Favors. He was rather insistent that birthday treats should involve food. I don’t have photos showing the fruit snacks, but we just punched a hole through the center of the end of the foil fruit snack pouch and attached it between the puzzle tags and the crayons.

    1. That’s what I thought too, Steph! Of course, before giving it to his friends, my son insisted we add a packet of fruit snacks. In his five year old mind, birthday treats = something edible!

  1. This is a really creative idea – love that they could double as an activity at the party too. Pinning now!
