How To Make String Easter Eggs

Here’s the complete tutorial, it’s easier than it sounds.

Supplies

  • Water Balloons (or Dart Balloons)
  • Embroidery Floss (string or yarn)
  • 1 Cup Liquid Starch
  • 1/2 Cup Flour

Other tools You’ll need

  • Medium Size Bowl and Whisk
  • Small Manual Air Pump
  • Clothespins
  • Push Pin or Safety Pin

Time needed: 1 hour and 30 minutes

Just follow these steps to make your very own string Easter eggs.

  1. Mix liquid starch and flour

To begin, add the liquid starch and flour to a bowl and whisk until the mixture is lump-free.

  2. Soak the strings

Select the color of the string and place it in the bowl. It is best to gently layer the string to avoid any tangles or knots.

  3. Wrap the wet strings around balloons

Next, blow up (or pump-up) balloons to your desired size then wrap the wet string around each balloon, beginning near the opening of the balloon.

Continue to wrap the string around the balloon until the desired look of your String Easter Egg is achieved. I used about half a skein of embroidery floss for each egg. If desired, wrap the second color of string around your balloon egg.

  4. Hang the balloons to dry

After you finish wrapping string around your balloon eggs, hang them to dry. It is best to hang them outside or over a drop cloth as they may drip.

I hung my String Easter Eggs in our backyard on a makeshift laundry line using clothespins.

  5. Pop the balloons

After the string is completely dry, use a push pin or safety pin to pop the balloon inside each String Easter Egg.

  6. Make a Garland

If you are creating String Easter Eggs to be used as garland, measure out the length of string or ribbon you will need then thread the string or ribbon through each egg.

That’s it! I love that these look just as pretty in a bowl as they do when they hang up as a garland. This is a fun Easter craft to do with kids, too.
