Earlier this year, I decided to be more intentional about changing the mantel above our fireplace to reflect the change in seasons. After having the same simple mantel decor for nearly ten years, it was time to freshen it up. My goal was to keep the cost down and create a big visual impact with just small mantel decor changes. Here’s a reminder of what we started with:

In the winter, we made the biggest changes with a white framed mirror,  new candle holders, a large white owl vase, and a small vase. We also replaced one of the picture frames. At that time, we intentionally chose some basic white pieces that could be used year-round and then accented with seasonal colors and foilage.

Here’s a look back at the seasonal mantels we’ve done so far:

Winter Mantel Decor – We used rustic red, bare branches with red berries and red hydrangeas.

Spring Mantel Decor – We used an arrangement of refreshing green eucalyptus and lavender, as well as green hydrangeas and sage green candles.

For our summer mantel decor, I was really inspired by the embedded sea glass candles the O’Neil Sisters from Running With Sisters shared as their Kenarry Creative Team post a few months ago. I wanted to go with a turquoise blue or teal color as the main accent color and include a few coastal elements like sisal rope and shells. There’s just something about that bright blue/green color that makes me think of a sandy beach or a backyard pool on a hot summer day. I also chose hot pink as a secondary accent color for the summer mantel decor to liven it up for the season.

While I was looking for summer decor to inspire the mantel, I found this gorgeous Anchor and Fresh Crabs Wood Sign Set from The Summery Umbrella. I ordered it in aqua and then used the sign color to determine other color choices for summer, like the candles on the mantel or the “wreath” outside our front door. The Anchor and Fresh Crabs Sign Set hangs on the orange wall in our dining room with close proximity to the fireplace so it ties in nicely with the rest of the summer mantel decor. There are 15 different color options for the sign set, like lime, peach, orchid or seafoam green, if teal isn’t your style.

Using basic white decorative elements for our mantel makes it super easy to change our summer mantel decor when the new season rolled around. Once I chose teal and hot pink for the colors, I just had to swap out a few things. First, I replaced the arrangement of green eucalyptus and lavender with tall beach grasses in the owl vase.

Next, I used hot pink hydrangeas in the small white vase instead of the green ones. I love how bright they are with just a hint of orange in the flowers. While I was buying these, I also got some other flowers in that same hot pink/orange-y color to use in a few other places around the room for summer.

After that, I swapped the bright green pillar candles with these beautiful teal ones. The ombre effect on the pillar candles makes them look really beach-y to me. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that the one came with sisal rope and a starfish shell wrapped around the center. I’m debating about whether I should do the same to the other candle or leave it as is.

I mentioned last month how I’d like to add a white ceramic rabbit to my spring mantel. Since I already had that idea in my head, I could not pass up this rustic pelican when I saw him at Hobby Lobby. I think he really adds to the whole coastal feel of the summer mantel decor, don’t you?

I’m continuing to keep the large mirror and the picture frames since they’re neutral and can really coordinate well with any color. In the future, I’m thinking about draping a small fishermen’s net across the top edge of the mirror with a few shells intertwined in the sisal rope.

As I stand back and look at the summer mantel decor, I wonder whether the left side needs a little more of the teal blue accent color? I may be on the look out for an inexpensive teal planter or vase to hold the hot pink hydrangeas in summer. Another option would be to replace the picture frame that holds our wedding picture with a teal blue one for the summer months. Something like this distressed turquoise picture frame on Amazon would be perfect.

Now the question is: what color scheme and additions or changes do I make to the mantel decor for fall? I think it help keep the costs lower if I just use the burnt orange candles from the original mantel on the candlesticks, but what else should I add? Please comment below and share your thoughts. We’re always looking for new ideas.

  1. Oh I wish we had a mantle, it must be so much fun decorating it for each season. Love the teal and “pinky” apricot colour combination, they look lovely together and the pelican is soooooo cute!!

  2. I love how versatile your pieces are when you change seasons, Carrie. The vases and the pillars stay the same, but the flowers and greenery change up with the season. It’s super simple, but allows for some touches of festive for spring, summer, fall and winter. I don’t have a mantle, but I change up our dining room table and entry way decor with the season. I’ve been looking for easier ways to do it, and I think your piece just inspired me to just change up flower arrangements and get versatile pieces that work all year long. Thanks for sharing this with us on #shinebloghop!
