Our oldest son is in kindergarten this year. When he started preschool a few years ago we asked our Kenarry readers for advice about whether it’s appropriate to give a teacher appreciation gift during the school year. From that post, we learned 5 ways to give thanks to teachers plus gained countless teacher appreciation gift ideas. A few of our key takeaways were that a teacher appreciation gift doesn’t need to be expensive and that gifts personalized by the student are especially valued or cherished by teachers.

In the past we’ve made a free printable “Thanks a Latte” teacher appreciation card for kids to color and give their teachers along with a gift card to a coffee shop. We’ve created kids canvas art at the holidays to give to teachers along with a craft or hobby store gift card. We’ve also given a coffee cup as a teacher appreciation gift with ingredients and a recipe to make a mug cake. We threw a coffee shop gift card in with that one too.

This year for Teacher Appreciation Week in our son’s kindergarten class at school, we were encouraged just to give his teacher a small token of appreciation in addition to participating in a larger gift from the whole class. We knew his teacher loves dark chocolate so we thought creating a free printable tag to use with chocolate as a teacher appreciation gift would be perfect for her this year. If you want to use these teacher appreciation tags, they’re available as a FREE digital download for Kenarry Idea Insiders – just look for the sign-up form below!

Down the side of the tag we wrote the word CHOCOLATE then my son chose words to describe his teacher that went with each letter in the word. We left space on the side so he could draw a picture of a flower, a heart or something else he thought she’d like. We just attached the chocolate poem to the top of a bag of dark chocolates to create a very easy teacher appreciation gift his teacher would love!

2. Print and Cut the Printable Teacher Appreciation Gift Tag.

Print the gift tag in color on white card stock. It’s designed to be a rich chocolate-y brown color so your child’s artwork can stand out while it also coordinates well with any bag of chocolates you choose.

3. Have your child decorate the card

If you chose Option A for your teacher appreciation gift tag, have your child write adjectives to go with each letter of the word chocolate. Older children can also use a thesaurus to help them find words or phrases that best describe their teachers. In the extra space on the right, allow your child to draw pictures and color the card anyway he (or she) wants. This is your child’s chance to personalize the card and express gratitude to his or her teachers.

If you went with Option B, you can just have your child draw a picture and sign his or her name. This option works especially well for preschool and early elementary age students who are still learning how to read and write.

4. Punch holes in the top of the Teacher Appreciation Gift Tag

After your child is done decorating the teacher appreciation card, use a single hole punch to put two holes in the top of the tag. Ours were about an inch and a half apart.

5. Use ribbon to tie the Teacher Appreciation Gift Tag to Chocolate

Wrap the gold ribbon securely around the top of the chocolate bag and loop it through the holes. You can see in the photo below I actually started by lacing the ribbon through the two holes, wrapped it around the bag once and then pulled the ribbon back through the holes to the front of the card.

Then tie a big bow to hold the ribbon in place. To make the bow sit nicely, I’ve found it’s best to make each end into a loop and then tie the two loops together. You can then trim the ends, tuck the ends behind the teacher appreciation gift tag or let them drape loosely over the front.

  1. love it, especially the hand written one, too sweet! Plus you could change the words too, which would be a fun project to do with the child, namely choosing the word that describes their teacher the best.
thanks for sharing on craft schooling Sunday!

    1. Absolutely! You could easily change the words to go with any adjectives that describe your child’s teacher – or use the letters for the start of sentences for an older child.

  2. Love it! I love that it really gets the kids involved too because it is their gift. It really shows their thoughtfulness which is what Teacher Appreciation is all about.

  4. I am having the same issue. I subscribed to the page and am taken there but the site will not take my password for the captcha for the Chocolate teacher printable. When I right click on the image and copy; it’s the actual picture that’s already been filled out. Are you able to email the printable by chance?

    Thanks so much!!!

    1. Hi Christie, I just checked our records and you’ve successfully subscribed. It looks like you just opened the Subscription Confirmation e-mail a few minutes ago so you’ve likely already solved your issue on your own? To be on the safe side though I also sent you an e-mail response with the direct link to the printable you want. Let me know if you have any further trouble getting it.

I hope your child’s teacher loves it! Have a great week!

      Best wishes,

  5. I can only download the pre-filled one- is that the case or is there one for the empty spaces?
    Thanks!

    1. Hi Liz, thank you for letting me know — I just sent you an e-mail with the info and file you need for the printable. We’re so glad you’ve subscribed!

      Best wishes, Carrie

    1. Hi Beckie, thank you for reaching out to us. When I checked our system this morning to verify your subscription, it looks like you probably already solved the issue yourself? I e-mailed you directly with the link as well. Basically though the subscription process has two steps for your protection, step one is the initial form that you filled out last night. The second part is to confirm your subscription in an e-mail message we send you. Once you confirm your e-mail address in that message, you should immediately be directed to our Subscriber Exclusive Resource Library and also sent an e-mail with the link for your future reference. You’ll find the blank version of the Teacher Appreciation printable about half way down the Resource Library page under CARDS/TAGS/Gifts > Teacher Appreciation.

      Have a great day!

      Best wishes,
      Carrie

      1. Hello! I subscribed to get the chocolate printable card but I never got the email to confirm my subscription. Would you please email me the printable? Thank you!

        1. Hi Cristina,
Thank you for reaching out to us. Our system shows that we e-mailed you twice with the confirmation message, but you “complained” about those confirmation messages. Since you’ve e-mailed us, I’m guessing that in this case, it was likely your e-mail program that automatically complained. Can you please check your spam filter and/or trash to see if you can find the e-mail from [email protected]? It should have the subject line “Important: Confirm your subscription”. If the confirmation e-mail ended up being filtered in there automatically it may have registered as a complaint. Please give that a try and if you still can’t find it, let me know.

          Thank you!

          Best wishes,
