Touchdown Cheese Dip Recipe Tips

This is a pretty simple recipe, but here are a few tips that I hope help you out.

Brown the meat before you put it in the slow cooker

I usually start by browning the meats together with the onion in a large pot or skillet with high sides.  Once it’s cooked through and the onion is soft, drain the fat.  This is a really simple recipe, but browning the meat and onions a day ahead of time and storing them in an airtight container in the fridge will save you a little time on game day.

Slice the Cheese to make it easier to melt

Next, slice the cheese into 1-2 inch cubes to make it easier to melt.

Stir it frequently

Add all of the ingredients, including the meat mixture, to the slow cooker, and stir every 30 minutes until completely melted.  All slow cookers are a little different, but my slow cooker takes about 2 hours on low.

I’ve had my slow cooker for many years so they don’t make it anymore, but it’s similar to this one.  I really love it, because it has a hinged lid for serving, and it can be programmed.  This lets me set the program on “low” for 2 hours, and then it automatically switches over to “keep warm” for the party.

Once the cheese dip has warmed through, serve it with lots of tortilla chips.  And, I mean lots of tortilla chips!  I’m not kidding you when I say that this dip goes fast.  All of the guests at your Super Bowl get-together will be asking for the recipe!

Ingredients

  • 1 lb. sausage the kind in a tube
  • 1 lb. Ground Beef
  • 1 Onion minced (you can use any kind, but I prefer red for the color)
  • 2 lbs. Velveeta cheese
  • 1 10 oz. can of Rotel tomatoes
  • 1 10 oz. can cream of chicken soup reduced sodium or heart healthy if you can find it
  • 1 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1 tsp cayenne pepper

Instructions

  • Brown the sausage and ground beef together with the onion in a large pot or skillet with high sides. Drain the fat.
  • Slice the cheese into 1-2″ cubes.
  • Add all of the ingredients to the slow cooker and cook on low.
  • Stir every 30 minutes until completely melted, about 2 hours.

Notes

All of the ingredients of the cheese dip tend to be a little salty, so I prefer to buy low sodium or “heart healthy” ingredients when I can. You can always add more salt if needed, but you can’t really take it out. Rotel has a “no salt added” version, and I can usually find a heart healthy version of the cream of chicken soup.

Superbowl: Game or Commercials?

So, the big question is, “Do you watch the Super Bowl for the game or the commercials?”  I tend to watch it more for the commercials and halftime performances, but we have some huge football fans in our family that won’t take their eyes off the game for even a second!  No matter what your reason is for watching the game, this Touchdown Cheese Dip will make it an even better event!
