See how to transform a $5 thrift store cabinet to replace an outdated CD rack in this DIY furniture makeover from Anastasia Vintage.
Hello again, dear Kenarry readers! It’s Stacy from Anastasia Vintage, back to share with you another fun vintage makeover project.
A while back, I was visiting my family in Canada, and finally had a chance to paint some furniture for them. Actually, after about a week of official “vacation”, my hands started to feel a bit restless and I needed to find something to paint, stat!
My mom mentioned that she was in need of a new cabinet for her CDs, and I knew that with a bit of hunting, I could find her the perfect piece. Thankfully, I spotted one at her local Salvation Army store, before it had even been taken inside. And for the awesome price of $5!
Structurally, the piece was in great condition, and although I liked the original look of the wood, the color was all wrong. With a bit of light sanding and cleaning, it was all ready to be redone.
I love the colors my mom chose for the piece – a creamy off-white with grey-beige interior. Ironically, they were very similar to the colors I used for my “Inspired by Mom” rocking chair a few months ago!
It was SO hard to resist adding some light distressing or dark wax to this piece, but that would have been totally wrong for my mom’s space. Being away from my usual stash of supplies did mean that I got to try out some new products though. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed using Minwax furniture wax – it went on easily with an old rag, and gave a lovely, hand-buffed finish.
Here it is, all finished!
My mom was absolutely thrilled with her new piece, which now sits proudly in her living room. Now I just have to tackle her orange-y oak dining set…and replace all of her bedroom furniture…and I’ll be one happy lady!
