Last winter we had a guest writer who shared tips for creating the perfect guest bedroom retreat. Since then I’ve been trying to come up with ways to incorporate some of those tips and ideas into our own guest room. One of the suggestions I’ve added is a basket of thoughtful amenities guests might need during their stay. I decided to step it up a notch and include a cute little welcome note as Guest Room Art in the basket. I thought it would be fun to share the Guest Room Art with you today as a FREE digital download, so you can use it in your own home. I’m also sharing some ideas for what to include in a guest room welcome basket.

Now before we go any further, I should start by telling you how I came up with the cute little saying on the Guest Room Art. My parents have an incredible gift for hospitality. They have always gone above and beyond in every way to make friends and family feel at home when they visit. My Dad, especially, is nearly insistent that one of the first things you should do whenever someone visits is show them where they’ll be sleeping. He feels strongly that knowing where they can put their suitcases helps put them at ease right away in a new environment and I’d have to agree. I know that always makes me feel more comfortable when I’m visiting somewhere new.

After my Dad shows them where they’ll be sleeping, he usually gives them a tour of the house and yard so they can get a feel for where everything is. Somewhere along the tour, my Dad tells them “There are just a few simple rules around here…

“IF YOU WANT TO EAT IT, EAT IT.
IF YOU WANT TO DRINK IT, DRINK IT.
IF YOU WANT TO BURN IT, BURN IT.”

Now my parents live on a cottage alongside a river where bonfires are nearly a daily occurrence so the last rule especially always makes their guests laugh. I do think stating the “rules” up front causes people to quickly feel like they have permission to make themselves at home and to help themselves to whatever they need or want. I thought it would be fun to incorporate that same sentiment into the Guest Room Art for the welcome basket at our house — only I left out that rule about burning since that definitely does NOT work at our house!

  1. This is so cute! What a way to make guests feel welcome in your home. I have a vase that I fill with the sample sizes of products in hotels and the store like shampoo, conditioner, lotion, advil, mouth wash, tooth paste and always a toothbrush, that seems to be what guests forget most often at my house!

Thanks for sharing at Turn It Up Tuesday

    1. That’s a fantastic idea, Hil. I need to add toothbrushes and toothpaste to our guest room basket. I bet visitors would appreciate that addition. Thanks!

  2. Thanks for sharing it on Throwback Thursdays! I think I’m going to print this out for my folk’s house! And include a few of the items listed in your other post! I loved them both, especially this time of year when we’re expecting visitors soon!
