Make a Mother’s Day DIY Gift featuring children’s birthstones on a necklace. We’ll show you how with this easy jewelry making video tutorial!

Hi Kenarry Readers! It’s Jennifer and Kitty O’Neil (the O’Neil Sisters from RunningWithSisters.com), and we have a lovely Mother’s Day DIY Gift to share: A Birthstone Necklace. We started by making a pendant to show off the kids’ (or grandkids’) birthstones. Then we turned the pendant into a pretty lariat necklace. And there’s no clasp needed on this necklace, so it’s easy to make and easy to wear!

Mother’s Day DIY Gift Video

We’ve included a video showing how to make the Birthstone Necklace. We’ll show you how to glue the birthstones to a pendant blank, how to attach the pendant to the chain, and how to attach the heart charm. If you can open a jump ring, you can make this necklace. And if you can’t open a jump ring, we’ll show you how! This is a really fun Mother’s Day DIY Gift to make. And she’ll love it!

  • Swarovski flatback crystal rhinestones, 4mm (We used Rose, Aquamarine, and Lt. Amethyst.)
  • 18” Loop chain, rose gold
  • Open heart charm, 12mmx16mm, rose gold
  • Bar pendant blank, 5mmx35mm, rose gold
  • 2 Jump rings, 5mm, rose gold
  • E6000 glue

TOOLS Needed:

  • Chain-nose pliers
  • Round-nose pliers
  • Toothpicks
  • Tweezers

Instructions:

Here’s how to make a DIY birthstone necklace.

1. GLUE RHINESTONES TO PENDANT.

Use tweezers to hold the rhinestone and dab glue on the back.

To make the birthstone pendant, determine the birthstone colors for each of the kids or grandkids. Here’s a helpful birthstone chart.

Arrange the birthstone gems in the order you want them. (We did oldest on top and youngest on the bottom.)

Put a dab of E6000 on a scrap piece of paper. Then pick up the rhinestone that goes on the bottom of the pendant using the tweezers.

Twirl a dab of glue onto the end of a toothpick then apply the glue to the back of the rhinestone. Using the tweezers, place the rhinestone onto the pendant. You can use a second clean toothpick to press the rhinestone down. Repeat until all the birthstone gems are glued onto the pendant. Let dry.

2. Attach The HEART TO The CHAIN.

Use pliers to attach a heart charm to the DIY necklace

To assemble the lariat necklace, attach the heart charm to the end of the chain with a jump ring. We like to use two pairs of pliers to open a jump ring.

Hold one side of a jump ring with the chain-nose pliers and the other side with the round-nose pliers. Orient the jump ring so the cut opening is at the top between the pliers.

Push one side down toward the table and the other up toward the ceiling to open the jump ring. Hold onto the jump ring with the chain-nose pliers and slide on the heart charm.

Then slide one end of the chain onto the jump ring. Use the chain-nose pliers to press the jump ring closed.

3. Attach PENDANT TO CHAIN.

Open and close the jump right for the Mother’s Day DIY Gift with pliers.

Next, attach the birthstone pendant to the other end of the chain using a jump ring. Open and close the jump ring the same way you did for the heart charm.

4. SLIDE PENDANT THROUGH CHARM.

To wear the Birthstone Necklace, just slide the birthstone pendant through the heart charm and let it hang like a lariat. So pretty! Don’t you just love a personalized Mother’s Day DIY Gift!?

We think this Birthstone Necklace is the perfect Mother’s Day DIY Gift.

Birthstone necklace ideas for 1 child or a big family

If you only have one birthstone to do, you can place it at the bottom of the pendant for a very modern and clean look.

If you have more birthstones than fit on one pendant, just add another pendant! This is a great way to do grandkids – a pendant for each family! And remember if you have any questions about making this birthstone necklace, leave us a comment, and we will reply. We really love hearing from you!
Happy Crafting,
Jennifer & Kitty
