National Teacher Appreciation Week is almost upon us and then the end of the school year won’t be long after that. It is so important to teach children to show their gratitude, even with a simple thank you note for teacher appreciation. Teachers work hard throughout the school year and many go above and beyond for their students.

Several years ago our Kenarry readers taught us 5 ways to give thanks when school ends. They also gave us countless teacher gift ideas, but the biggest takeaway was how personal notes are the best way to thank a teacher.

A printable teacher appreciation card that reads

How do you write a thank you note to a teacher?

Last year, when our oldest son was in second grade, he had an incredible teacher. She taught him a lot and was very special to him. As the school year was wrapping up, we wanted to design a sentimental thank you note for teacher appreciation to show her how much she meant to him.

When we gave his teacher the thank you note, we also included a small gift card to Amazon as a token of our appreciation. More importantly though, we designed the card so that he could intentionally write a personal message on the inside of the card listing 3 specific things he was going to always remember from second grade.

I think our son’s teacher teared up a little when she read the note he wrote to her on the inside of the card. She absolutely loved it!

If you’re looking for a sentimental teacher appreciation card, we’ve made this thank you note available as a FREE digital download for Kenarry Idea Insiders.

2. Print the teacher thank you note.

This thank you note for teacher appreciation is designed to be two sided. First you’ll print the front/back side of the card on white card stock. Then run the card stock back through your printer to print the message on the inside of the card.

Every printer is different so you may need to flip or rotate your card stock to get the teacher appreciation card to print correctly. It might be helpful to test it out on regular printer paper first.

3. Cut and fold the thank you card for teacher appreciation.

Using scissors or a paper cutter, trim the card down to 5 x 7 inches. There’s no need to measure! If you look closely, you’ll see I put faint gray lines on the front of the thank you note to guide you.

Next, fold the card in half and press along the fold to create a good crease.

4. Attach a gift card.

Now use glue or tape to attach a gift card to the inside of the thank you note. We used an Amazon gift card, but you could get a gift card to Target, Hobby Lobby or a coffee shop.

You could also pair the thank you note with a thoughtful teacher appreciation gift instead of a gift card. Some suggestions are fresh or potted flowers, school supplies, his or her favorite candy, beverage or snack. Any of those would be great ideas to go with this thank you note for teacher appreciation.

5. Sign, seal, deliver.

Last but not least, have your child write 3 things on the inside of the card that she or he will always remember from the school year. This is a good opportunity to recall great experiences that happened this year. Have your child think back to field trips, a special book the teacher read to the class, a meaningful class project, or a fun event that took place during the school year.

Be sure to also have your child sign his or her name on the inside of the card. If you want, write an additional personal thank you note from you too. It would totally make the teacher’s day. Once everyone has signed the thank you note, put it in an envelope.

Now you’re ready to give the thank you note for teacher appreciation!

Other Times To Give An Owl Thank You Card

You may have noticed, the card doesn’t actually say anything about school or teachers. This means you could also use this thank you note for other special occasions like:

  • An anniversary card to tell your partner 3 things you’ll always remember about him or her.
  • A thank you note after a birthday or Christmas to say 3 things that made the day extra special, in addition to thanking the intended recipient for any gifts that were given.
  • A way to show appreciation after grandparents or someone took you on a special vacation or experience.
