Take your decor from holidays to Winter by changing a few throw pillows and blankets. These Winter decorating ideas go from Christmas to cozy for Winter.

So you’ve hauled out the dry Christmas tree and vacuumed up all the needles. The Christmas boxes are getting packed up and put away. But now what? Do things feel a little bare? Winter is here for real now, and it’s waaaay too soon to decorate for Spring. Today I’m sharing some winter decorating ideas to help you bridge the gap between Christmas and spring.

Does anyone else struggle with the transition from Christmas to cozy winter decor? Over the years, I’ve come up with some Winter decorating ideas and a super-simple strategy to take my living room from the holidays to warm and cozy for winter, with only a few small decor changes.

The secret to transition from Christmas to cozy Winter decor…

Here it is: You start with mostly white, ivory, and neutral pillows and throw blankets. Add in a few red accents for Christmas, and then take them away once the holidays are over. You might add in some blue or teal for Winter as well. Let’s look at some examples.

Here’s Christmas:

And here one pillow has been swapped out for winter. And actually it’s not even a whole pillow- it’s just a different pillow cover. Covers are awesome because they take up way less storage space than whole pillows- especially for those of us who have throw pillow hoarding problems (Ahem!). You can check out my tutorial to make your own easy throw pillow covers HERE.

I got this ultra-cozy ivory cable-knit throw (above) from Target for my sister for Christmas- shhhhh! And since I haven’t wrapped it up yet, why not show you how to style it? The snowflake pillows (above and below) are also from Target. One of these days I’m going to try making this chunky arm knit throw from Susan of Love of Home.

Bring in the texture!

Winter decor is all about texture. So I try to bring in a variety of textures and patterns- even if they are just patterns within the texture of the fabric. This is even more important when using mostly neutral colors. The combination above works because of the multiple textures. And so does the one below.

Add cozy Winter decor to bedrooms too!

And finally, it’s so easy to cozy up your bedroom for winter too- I added two snowflake throw pillows (similar) and a blanket (similar) to my bedroom. That’s it!

As a final thought, this is something you can build gradually over time. My living room and front porch are usually the only parts of my house that get seasonal decor love outside of Christmas. At this stage of life, trying to decorate my whole house seasonally doesn’t really make sense.

I hope these winter decorating ideas help you make a beautiful and easy transition from Christmas to cozy. Happy Winter!
