One of my favorite things about the holiday season is getting together with friends to celebrate. I’m part of a group of eight women who plan an annual day-long Women’s Service Day event. Over the 14 years we’ve organized this volunteer event in our community, we’ve become very close friends. We’ve been there for each other through job changes, life struggles and most recently the loss of a spouse. We’ve also been fortunate to celebrate weddings, birthdays, new babies, retirements and other special milestones together. One of the agencies we serve recently referred to our group as “The Great Eight,” which pretty much sums up how I feel about this band of friends, too. I truly feel blessed to have these women in my life.
My Women’s Service Day friends and I often look for any excuse to get together throughout the year whether we’re planning our annual event or not. Our “meetings” always involve wine, food and great conversation. We especially enjoy getting together at Christmas time. Some years we’ve kept it simple and met at restaurants. A few of the years we’ve gotten together at someone’s house to bake cookies and other holiday recipes. This year, we decided it would be fun to gather at one person’s home for delicious party food and help her get ready for Christmas. We were each instructed to bring an ornament to exchange and a “heavy” appetizer to share for dinner.
When someone says bring “heavy” appetizers, I usually think of meats, cheeses or breads used in substantial holiday party recipes. My friend lives a half hour away, so I wanted to bring delicious party food that didn’t need to be cooked or baked. I decided to make turkey, shredded cheese and cream cheese rolled up in tortillas, but to spice it up by throwing in a little Tabasco. Tabasco comes in so many flavors these days including the Original Red and Green Jalapeño, but they also have a Smoked Chipotle Pepper Sauce. All of these can be easily found at Walmart and other retailers in the condiments aisle.
I usually avoid spicy hot foods, but Tabasco sauces are incredibly versatile, especially when you use them to enhance the flavor in your holiday party recipes rather than as a topping. I chose to use 4 teaspoons of the Tabasco Chipotle Pepper Sauce in my recipe to give the turkey roll-ups an amazing savory smoky flavor without making them spicy hot.
When I got together with my Women’s Service Day friends for our holiday party, we had a fantastic buffet of delicious party food to fill our plates as we shared our favorite holiday traditions and caught up on each other’s lives. My friends specifically mentioned how delicious the Chipotle Turkey Roll-ups were. They were surprised to learn it was a Tabasco sauce that made the Chipotle Turkey Roll-ups so flavorful.
