This American Flag Cake is perfect for a crowd on the 4th of July and you don’t have to worry about hauling 24 cupcakes, one cake works.

Hi everyone, It’s Erica from Messy Momma Crafts. With the 4th of July on its way, I have been making a ton of red, white and blue treats and crafts. My pantry is filled with fun sweets for my love of creating new and tasty things. For example, I pretty much had everything I needed to make for this American Flag Cake.

Kitchen Tools Needed:

  • 9″ Baking pan
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Large white plate or cake platter
  • Spatula

Supplies or Ingredients Needed:

  • Prepared Cake Mix (oil, eggs and water)
  • Red, white and blue M&M’s
  • Vanilla frosting
  • Non-stick cooking spray
  • Flour

Instructions:

1. Prepare your cake.

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Spray a non-stick cooking spray in your pan and lightly coat with flour.

In a large mixing bowl, combine your cake mix, oil, eggs, and water. Scoop into your cake pan and bake for 40 minutes.

2. LET your cake cool.

Carefully remove your cake from the oven with hot pads and let it cool in the pan. Once the cake has cooled, place your hand on top of the cake and turn the pan upside down to remove the cake from the pan.

3. Frost and decorate your cake.

Use the blue M&M’s to make a backward L shape in the top left corner, and fill it in with blue and white M&M’s to look like the stars on the flag.

In the same rows as the blue and white M&M’s in the corner, continue to use red and white M&M’s to make rows of two red and two white until the cake is filled.

Once your cake is topped with red, white and blue M&M’s to look like a flag, your cake is complete.

How do you prevent the cake from sticking to the pan?

The most stunning thing about this cake is how beautiful it looks from all sides. So it will look even better displayed outside of the pan.

If you have issues with your cakes sticking to your pan, try this hack:

  1. Butter or grease your cake pan.
  2. Lightly dust it with flour.

The cake should slide out easily after baking. If you still have problems, you can always place some parchment paper in the pan first.
