This DIY utensil holder is perfect for summer entertaining, or to add a one-of-a-kind piece to your kitchen. Best of all, the lemons add a bright pop of color to any space.
Hello! Michelle here from Our Crafty Mom sharing a super fun summer caddy with a fresh and bright lemon theme! I don’t know what it is about lemon decor, but I just love it.
To me, it signifies summer and all the good things that come with warmer weather.
This is a simple makeover project that you can easily recreate using just a few supplies.
How to Make a DIY Utensil Holder
While I used a wood caddy that I received in a subscription box, you may be able to find a similar style at a thrift store, or home store. I will also link to a similar caddy from Amazon if you want to purchase one.

More Free Lemon Printables
If you’d like additional design options for your caddy, I’ve got three more free lemon printables available for you on my website.
Print and prepare The Lemon Printable for crafting
Once you receive the “When Life Gives You Lemons” printable, download it to your computer and print in color. Trim it to size to fit the front and sides of the caddy.
It works better if you tear the printables to the size that you want, rather than cutting them. The tearing of the paper will blend in better.
Paint the Wood Caddy
Use a foam brush to paint the caddy with white chalk paint. Rather than paint it a solid white, I gave it a whitewash finish.
Whitewash is a painting technique where you “offload” most of the paint from your brush and lightly paint your piece. It gives it a lighter finish which is perfect for a summer caddy. Let it completely dry.
Add Mod Podge to Caddy
Brush a layer of Mod Podge onto the front of the wood caddy. Place the trimmed lemon print in the center and smooth it out with your fingers or a credit card.
This process is called decoupage. If you haven’t tried it yet, it is very addictive!
If you’d like, you can also repeat the process with the two sides. I used the smaller mason jar print from the set of free lemon printables available on my website for each side of my caddy.
Finish with a Top Coat
The great thing about Mod Podge is it acts as a sealer, glue, and finish all in one! You want to add 2-3 coats of Mod Podge to seal the images.
Secure Leather Straps
To give the caddy a more modern look, I took off the twine that was on the piece and replaced it with black leather straps that I cut to size.
If you have an old narrow belt you can also use that. While I simply hot glued the edges, you can also use tacks or other embellishments.
That’s all there is to it! Now you have a beautiful DIY utensil holder that you can use with silverware or plasticware and linen or paper napkins.
But that’s not all you can use it for. Use your creativity to really make it your own. It will hold pint-sized mason jars, so I could see using it at a coffee station or even in an office to hold supplies.
Wouldn’t it be perfect for a kids’ art caddy? Fill it with colored pencils, crayons, and markers. Maybe place small notebooks at the bottom. How would you use this summer caddy?
