Father’s Day is just a few weeks away. So I was so excited when Meaghan from Cook. Craft. Love. shared these adorable lawn mower cupcakes with us as her recipe idea for this month. I mean, seriously guys, how CUTE are these Father’s Day cupcakes?
These Father’s Day cupcakes are sure to WOW all the dads, papas, grandfathers, pop-pops, grandpas, uncles, brothers and other special men in your life. Plus they’re easier to create than you’d think!
“These were so fun to make” Meaghan told me. “I hope they love them!” If the reaction from my own boys is any indication, I’m sure they will. When C1 and C2 looked over my shoulder at the computer and saw these photos they immediately started looking in the kitchen with eager anticipation. Boy oh boy were they disappointed when I told them this was Ms. Meaghan’s recipe for Kenarry and not something momma made this week.
How to Make Lawn Mower Father’s Day Cupcakes
Meaghan said she made these Father’s Day cupcakes from a boxed cake mix and canned frosting because there’s a lot of assembly. But feel free to use your favorite cupcake and frosting recipes for these lawn mower cupcakes instead.

Ingredients:
These are the ingredients you’ll need. All the exact amounts are in the printable card at the bottom of this post.
For the Cupcakes
- Chocolate cake mix
- Ingredients for the cake on the box
- Pre-made white frosting
- Green cupcake liners
- Green gel food color
For the Lawn Mowers
Instructions:
1. Bake the cupcakes
Prepare the cupcake batter following the directions on the cake mix box. Put the paper liners in a cupcake pan or muffin tin. Then fill each one about 2/3 of the way full with cupcake batter. This way you don’t have too much of a dome on the cupcakes. Bake them in your oven using the time and temperature indicated on your cake mix box.
2. Prepare the frosting
In a small mixing bowl, color the frosting to your desired shade of green and set aside.
3. Make the handles for the lawn mowers
While the cupcakes are cooling, melt the chocolate chips in the microwave for 30 seconds and stir. Continue heating in 10-second increments, stirring after each one, until completely melted. Then pour chocolate into a disposable piping bag fitted with a Wilton #1 round tip.
Next on a sheet of wax or parchment paper pipe the handles for your lawn mowers by making a rounded rectangle about 1 1/2″ high with a crossbar. Make more than you think you need in case some of them break. Put the lawn mower handles in the freezer for 15 minutes until solid.
4. Make the body for the candy lawn mowers
While the handles are in the freezer, unwrap the Hershey’s Nuggets and attach the M&M wheels using the melted chocolate. Freeze for 15 minutes.
5. Assemble the candy lawn mowers
Once the body and handles of the mowers have set remove them from the freezer and attach the handles to the body of the mower with melted chocolate. Do this quickly because the chocolate will harden fast on the frozen pieces! If the chocolate becomes too soft as you handle it and starts to melt pop it back in the freezer.
Put the assembled lawn mowers back in the freezer for another 5 minutes.
6. Frost the cupcakes
Add your green frosting to a piping bag fitted with a Wilton grass piping tip. Or you can make your own grass tip by folding over the untrimmed tip of the piping bag, securing it with tape, and poking large holes in it with a toothpick. (That’s what Meaghan did. She said it worked like a charm!)
Grass up your cupcakes! Meaghan went with a messy look for these cupcakes so the lawn mower can earn it’s keep, but you can make it as neat or as messy as you like.
7. Top the Father’s Day cupcakes with candy lawn mowers
Finally, top the cupcakes with chilled, assembled lawn mowers just before serving. The moisture from the cupcakes tends to pull the color out of the M&Ms. So be prepared for that if you want to assemble your Father’s Day cupcakes in advance.
