Looking for a fun and easy springtime DIY project? This Rain Boots Spring Door Hanger is perfect for adding a touch of seasonal cheer to your home.

Hello! Michelle here from Our Crafty Mom. If you’re like me, you spend a lot of time dreaming about springtime weather during the cold winter months.

While I can’t control the weather, I can decorate my door with a festive spring door hanger! This project is in the shape of adorable rain boots for a nice switch from the classic front door wreath. Plus, it’s easy and fun to make!

The moment I spotted this unfinished wood sign at the craft store, I knew it would make a perfect spring door hanger! It made me think of “April showers bring May flowers”. And, I definitely have spring flowers (and weather) on my mind!

How to Make a spring door hanger

The best part is this door hanger is budget-friendly too as I used dollar store spring flowers.

Paint the Rain Boots

The first thing you want to do is paint the rain boots the color that you want to use with the buffalo check stencil. I wanted to use a bright accent color, so I kept the base white.

white chalk paint and foam brush

You can use any paint that you like, but my go-to is usually white chalk paint. I love the finish! You will probably need at least 2 coats of white paint to cover the wood.

Be sure to let the paint dry well before applying the stencil.

Apply the Buffalo Plaid Stencil

Once the paint is completely dry, place your stencil onto the center of the rain boots. You may need to add a little tape to keep it secure. Some stencils have a sticky backing that work great!

Use a very dry brush, or stencil brush, to go over the stencil with your accent color paint. I used a pretty blue that I knew would pop with the yellow spring flowers.

The best tip I have when working with stencils is less paint is more. This will help avoid bleeding. If you need to touch up some areas with a little paint after that is much easier than trying to fix bleeding. Let dry.

Make a pretty bow

Now you want to make a pretty bow for your door hanger. I was so excited when I found spring rain boots ribbon to go with my door hanger! Unfortunately, I went back to get another roll and it was gone. I’ve learned if you really love something you see in craft stores, scoop it up otherwise it will be gone!

making bow for door decor

I always use a wired ribbon as it’s easy to work with and really holds a nice shape. Use a pipe cleaner or floral wire to secure it to the upper corner of the rain boots.

Hot Glue the flowers

I placed the ribbon first as I wanted the flowers to come all around the ribbon and really fill it in nicely. I stuck with simple yellow and white spring flowers.

Start in one section and continue to add the flowers until you are happy with the look.

The simple daffodils really make this piece. Can you believe they are from the dollar store?!

Add black paint

Once I finished the door hanger I wasn’t happy with how the bottom of the boots looked, so I used black craft paint and a small brush to add an outline to the bottom of the boots.

This made all the difference! You could also use a black sharpie to make it even easier. I’m so happy with how this turned out. I may add a little spring quote to the center of the boots but haven’t decided yet. Sometimes I have trouble calling a project done! 🙂

Create a wood bead hanger

A perfect example of this is I ended up making a yellow bead hanger to attach to the rain boots instead of the twine that it came with. A simple addition, but it takes it to the next level. It’s all in the details, folks!
