DIY idea with tiles
I was browsing through one of my local home improvement stores a few weeks ago when these beautiful 12×12 tiles just jumped out at me. There were beautiful and rustic natural stone tiles, ceramic tiles and these shiny brown and gold tiles. I immediately thought, “Hey, I can cut these into 4″x4″ squares and make some nice little coasters for cheap!”
Make your own placemats
This is a common scenario for me. One of my most favorite ways to spend my free time is browsing the aisles of one of my local home improvement stores looking for inspiration or ways to repurpose items. Well, my idea to make coasters led me to think that maybe I could leave these 12×12 tiles just as they are and make some DIY tile placemats or chargers from them.
The placemat ideas from tiles like this are endless!
I also thought they’d be a great compliment to my burlap placemats. I use these burlap placemats all the time. I just love the texture that they add to my table decor. You can read my Easy Sew Burlap Placemats tutorial here on Kenarry.
how to make DIY Tile Placemats
For these DIY Tile Placemats, you’re gonna need a few supplies. I have these huge rolls of cork that my husband purchased via an online auction for just a couple of dollars. It’s the kind of cork used for underlayment for tile flooring. But, you can purchase cork at your local home improvement store, hardware store or even craft store.
You can pick up all these supplies at your local home improvement store, use what you have on-hand or even purchase them online. To make your shopping a little easier, we’ll provide a link to similar products that you can purchase on Amazon, where applicable.
Supplies:
Once you have your supplies, making the placemats will take you a matter of minutes. Are you ready? Here goes…..
Instructions
Here’s how to make placemats that require no sewing. I included step-by-step pictures too to help you along.
1. Gather Your supplies
Gather your supplies all together. You will need a clean tabletop to work on as well.
2. Trim down a sheet of cork
If you purchased 12″x12″ sheets of cork, then you won’t need to cut anything! And you can skip ahead to Step Three.
Lay your tile on top of your cork and trace with a marker. Lay your ruler along one of the lines you drew on the cork with a marker. Holding the ruler in place, use your utility knife to cut along the marked line. Using a ruler as a guide will help you to cut straight lines. You really only need to score the cork. Don’t worry if you don’t cut all the way through. Simply fold the cork back along the scored line and it will just break right off.
3. Put adhesive on the cork and tile
Next, spray adhesive on the back of the cork and the back of the tile. Wait a couple of minutes for the adhesive to become tacky.
4. Attach the corkboard to the tile
Then pick up the cork, starting at one corner, lay the cork on top of the tile. Apply pressure on the back of the cork with your hand. Wait just a couple of minutes for the adhesive to dry (follow the instructions on the back of the spray adhesive).
5. Place the mat on your table
That’s it! Place the mat on your table and style it. This is perfect for any holiday or season.
No-sew placemats anyone can make
I thought these DIY Tile Placemats turned out beautifully! The tiles come in many different colors, styles, textures and price ranges from about $1.97 each to more than $20.00 each. Just something to keep in mind!
You know, I still might buy some more of these 12″ tiles that are composed of 1″x1″ tiles as they would be super easy to cut and make into coasters. I really like the look of the natural stone and pebble tile, too, but they don’t provide for a very flat surface. Still, there are plenty of options. Just go browse your local home improvement/hardware store and you’ll see what I mean!
I hope you liked this DIY Tile Placemat tutorial. If you try this out, I’d love to hear about it!
