One of the ways I am turning our condo unit into a cozy home is by DIYing a lot of our decor! One thing I decided to DIY recently was some shower steamers. I absolutely adore our bathroom, and I wanted to give it a spa-like feel – so I figured shower steamers would be a great way to do that!

These are the supplies you’ll need. All the exact amounts are in the printable card at the bottom of this post.
- Baking soda
- Cornstarch
- Water
- Essential oils of your choice
DIY Shower Steamers
Start With the dry ingredients
When you begin mixing the ingredients to these DIY shower steamers, start by mixing together the dry ingredients, ie.: your baking soda and cornstarch.
Add Water One Tablespoon at a time
If you feel like your mixture is a little too dry, then feel free to add water one tablespoon at a time. On that note, if your mixture is a little too runny, then feel free to add more baking soda one tablespoon at a time.
The Ideal Consistency
When you’re making these shower steamers, you’ll want it to feel a little dryer than wet sand. You will want the steamers to hold together when shaping the,
What Essential Oils To Use
The best part about this recipe for DIY Shower Steamers is that you can use whatever essential oils suit you best.
In our home, we constantly have the following essential oils on-hand:
- Lavender (Great for promoting relaxation and relieving stress)
- Peppermint (Works great for easing headaches and migraines)
- Cedarwood (Most popular for relaxing the body and also, its skin benefits)
Lots of people also love using eucalyptus essential oil for their shower steamers.
A Little Goes A Long Way
When adding essential oils to your shower steamers, be sure to only use one or two drops. You don’t want to overpower your shower steamers with too much oil – trust me when I say, a little goes a long way.
Feel Free To Use a Mold
When shaping these shower steamers, feel free to use a silicone mold like ones that are shaped as hearts, stars, etc. As a busy mom of two, I like forming mind into small shower steamer “patties” to save on time.
How to Make Shower Steamers
Equipment
Supplies
- 1 3/4 cups baking soda
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 1/2 cup water
- 1-2 drops essential oil your choice
Instructions
- In a large bowl, sift together baking soda and cornstarch.
- Slowly add water and mix until the ingredients can be packed together and hold its shape.
- Use a tablespoon measuring spoon to scoop out some of the mixture and pack it into a small circle/patty. Place on wax or parchment paper.
- Add one to two drops of essential oil (your choice).
- Place in a small bowl and enjoy using them in your shower (one at a time)
