Halloween is a fun holiday when it comes to decor and crafting. I love to create decorations and especially love pumpkin carving with the family. It’s fun to go through the whole process as each family member picks out their pumpkin, decides on a decoration option and starts carving or painting. When my kids were little and could not carve pumpkins, I let them paint on the pumpkins instead. As they were able to use carving knives, I then let them go wild with creating faces.

However, it always helps to have a guide for carving and that is why I created these jack o’lantern faces to help make the process easier. You can use this printable to trace onto pumpkins before carving or even for painting or creating other types of decorations around the house.

Tips on Using Jack O’Lantern Faces Printable:

Printing Templates at Home

When it comes to using printables as guides or templates, you can easily print the PDF at home using draft quality. Since you don’t need a high-quality print, you save ink printing with this setting, as you are only using the print-out as a guide.

Also remember that with printables you can change the percentage or size of the printable page. Depending on the size of your pumpkin or if you choose to use these designs for another crafty project, you can always print at 50% or 25% to get different sized guides and templates.

Carving Jack O’Lantern Faces

Pumpkin carving might seem straightforward, but once you get into it there are some challenging parts. Here are few tips and ideas to make the whole process easier and more fun for the family, especially little kids.

The first tip is to pick the best pumpkin possible! Remember that a uniform surface is going to be easier to work with and a larger pumpkin of course is easier to carve compared to a small size when your design has detailed elements.

Second, be sure to cut the top and hollow out your pumpkin first before carving a design in the front. You can collect the seeds and separate to make baked pumpkin seeds as well, so don’t toss it all out. But having a cleaned out pumpkin ready to be carved, makes the process easier.

Third, be sure to transfer or draw our your design first before carving! I’m sure it has happened to all of us at some point… but if you make a mistake in carving, it’s permanent! There isn’t an easy way to reattach a piece of the pumpkin. So be sure to print out the jack o’lantern faces printable and finalize your design before cutting. You can tape the design onto the pumpkin and use your knife or a pen to imprint the design onto the pumpkin surface.

Finally, just take your time! No one wants to make a mistake while carving, so be patient and take your time in cutting out pieces and following your design plan. For advanced pumpkin carvers, remember that you can also shave our certain areas to create more highlights and design details. It’s not just about carving out silhouette shapes!

Go beyond Pumpkin Carving

In addition to using this jack o’lantern faces printable for pumpkin carving, consider using them as templates for other craft projects as well.

If your kids are young and unable to carve pumpkins, you can use these same designs as a template for painting. You can also create similar painting designs on paper and create a garland for decoration as well.

As I mentioned earlier, you can also print out the designs at different sizes for a variety of projects such as cardmaking or stencil printing. There’s really a lot of uses for digital printable designs, so save these files in your digital library for years of fun crafting!
