I’ve designed a set of printable bookmarks that are perfect for your summertime reading goals. Add a splash of color and cuteness to your books and encourage your kids to read all summer long. I will also share some tips on how to print, trim and protect these bookmarks, as well as some gift ideas!

When summer vacation rolls around, I spend a lot of time simply monitoring my kids at home or various activities while school is out on break. This actually gives me more time for leisure reading as well, so I’m always diving into different novels and books at home, around the pool and on the go. So I decided to create a set of fun and colorful printable bookmarks to use all summer long. You can print these out for yourself and/or for your kids.

When it comes to digital designs, bookmarks are one of the easier DIY crafts to create at home. Print out the designs, trim and you’ve got yourself a pretty bookmark to hold your place in all the books you currently are reading. Here’s a set of designs I have created that would be especially great for summertime use.

Tips on Using These Printable Bookmarks:

Download, Print, Trim

For the quickest DIY activity, just download these free printable bookmarks, print them out and trim them for immediate use. I prefer printing on cardstock paper that is a bit thicker than regular printer paper. If you don’t have cardstock, you can reinforce your bookmarks by gluing them onto some cardboard or several sheets of paper together. In fact, if you don’t want the back of your bookmark to be blank, you can glue some decorative scrapbook paper on the back. This helps the bookmark last longer as well.

Also, remember when printing full-color files that you have to select the best print quality possible in your printer settings. That will give you the best color and most brilliant design results. If you have it available, you might even want to use photo paper for maximum quality.

Protecting Printable Bookmarks for Durability

We all know that over time, paper bookmarks definitely get worn through use, especially the edges that stick out of the books. If you want more protection so these bookmarks will last longer, consider laminating these designs once you have them trimmed out.

If you don’t have a laminator, you can also use clear packing tape to cover both the front and back. This just helps to reinforce your paper bookmarks, so they last as long as possible.

Another great idea is to round the corners of your bookmarks if you don’t want hard edges. I often don’t like the sharp corners, especially after laminating, so I use a corner rounder tool. If you don’t have special tools, you can simply put a coin on the edge of the bookmark and use it as a guide to trim your bookmarks manually with scissors.

Decorative Ideas and Gift making

Another way to get your DIY craft mojo going with these printable bookmarks is to use a hole puncher to make a hole at the top, so you can string through some yarn and create a tassel. This really makes your printable bookmark design look like a finished product that you purchased at a store! It’s also a fun crafternoon activity with your kids, so they can make their own bookmarks and style them as they please with these extra decorations.

Finally, consider adding a handmade bookmark whenever you give a book as a gift! The beauty of digital printables is that you can print as many copies as you need and remember that the back of the bookmark can even be personalized or you can add a message there for your recipient. It’s just another fun way to use digital materials to your advantage and show a bit more consideration in your gift giving.
