Best Soup for Cold Weather
In Michigan, we’re breaking out the winter coats, boots, scarves and hats as we prepare for the long winter ahead. With our preparations, we’re also breaking out our slow cookers and trying new recipes to warm us up! I don’t know about you, but I especially crave soup recipes this time of year.
A few weeks ago Ashlyn from Belle of the Kitchen was here sharing a delicious recipe for Crockpot Cheeseburger Soup as part of our Ideas for the Kitchen exchange to bring new recipes to our readers. While she was here, I was over at her blog sharing this recipe for Slow Cooker Potato Soup, which combines all the flavors you love in a hearty soup fit for the whole family.
It’s loaded with tons of ham, big chunks of potato, diced onions, shredded cheddar cheese and of course topped with crispy bacon. Isn’t everything better with bacon?
Slow Cooker Recipes – Family Dinner-Saver
With two small kids at home, slow cooker recipes make my days so much easier. I love simple recipes like this, where you just throw it all in the slow cooker or crock pot in the morning and let the delicious aroma fill the house by dinner time.

Kitchen Tools Needed:
- Vegetable peeler
- Chef’s knife
- Cutting board
- Measuring cup
- Measuring spoons
- Slow cooker
- Whisk
- Small mixing bowl
Ingredients Needed
These are the ingredients you’ll need. All the exact amounts are in the printable card at the bottom of this post.
- Potatoes
- Onion
- Diced ham
- Cream of celery soup
- Vegetable or chicken broth
- Minced garlic
- Black pepper
- Shredded cheddar cheese
- Milk
- Flour
- Bacon slices
The only extra step for Slow Cooker Potato Soup involves adding cheese, milk, and flour about an hour before you’re ready to serve it. I learned the hard way if you add milk in the morning, it separates or curdles over the course of the day. The soup still tastes good, but it doesn’t have the smooth, creamy texture you want in a Slow Cooker Potato Soup.

Slow Cooker Loaded Potato Soup
Ingredients
- 6 potatoes about 7 cups

- 16 oz diced ham
- 1 can of cream of celery soup 10.5 oz.
- 1 can vegetable or chicken broth 14.5 oz.
- 1 1/2 cups Water
- 2 teaspoons Minced Garlic
- 1/2 teaspoon Black Pepper
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup milk
- 1 tablespoon Flour
- 16 oz bacon slices cooked and crumbled into bits
Instructions
- Wash, peel and dice the potatoes. Place in the bottom of a slow cooker.
- Add onion, ham, cream of celery soup, vegetable or chicken broth, water, minced garlic and black pepper. Cook on low for 7-8 hours or high for 3-4 hours. You want the potatoes to be tender.
- An hour before you’re ready to serve the soup, add 1 1/2 cups of the shredded cheese. Whisk together flour and milk in a small bowl and pour into the slow cooker.
- Garnish with the remaining cheese and crumbled bacon bits. Enjoy!

How to Make Dairy-Free Potato Soup
Since publishing this recipe, we’ve been asked, “how do you make creamy potato soup without dairy?”
I admit that the milk and cheese add something amazing to the soup. But you can easily substitute soymilk for the milk and use dairy-free soy margarine too. The Spruce Eats has a delicious recipe you can follow.

Carrie! You read my mind. I’m trying this one tomorrow ~ it is exactly what I was wishing for today. Happy Monday to you!!! <3 Trish
Awww… yay! I love that this crossed your path at just the right time, Trish. How did the soup turn out?
AMAZING!! We went without the Ham but topped it with bacon and it was absolutely perfect. Thanks again!!! XxOo
I’m thrilled to hear your family enjoyed it, Trish. Good to know, too, that it’s delicious even without the ham. Thanks for letting me know!
I do love a great potato soup but I have never tried one made in a slow cooker – thanks so much for giving us this great recipe! If you had a spare moment, I would be delighted if you’d drop this (and anything else you’d like to share) by at the #PureBlogLove DIY and recipe link party! You can find me here: http://picnicnz.blogspot.co.nz/
Thanks so much for stopping by, Nicole! I appreciate the invitation.
Looks delicious! I have yet to make a soup in the slow cooker…I think I need to start! Perhaps with yours!
Oh Michelle! You’ll love soups in the slow cooker! With your busy life and all the kids’ sport activities, it would make a super easy dinner for you.
Hi, I do not see the serving size, it must be for a lot though with all those ingredients. I would be cooking for for 2 and need to cut the recipe down to accomodate for that (also not using the ham), Help please!
Hi Sharon, the soup fills a standard sized slow cooker, so I would think you could cut the recipe in half and have enough for the two of you. It’s great leftover, though and also freezes well. I made the full size batch for the two of us and our two small boys and had enough leftover to feed my parents-in-law for another meal when they came a few weeks later. I’m sure it will be delicious even without the ham. Let me know what you think when you try it.
Thanks for linking up your delicious potato soup at The Pretty Pintastic Party! We loved it so much we’re featuring it at the party this weekend! Hope to see you there!
Oh Jamie! You just made my day. I’m so honored you and the other ladies from the Pretty Pintastic Party chose our recipe to feature at this weekend’s party. Thank you so much!
Made this for dinner tonight..DELICIOUS!!! Thanks for such a great recipe!!
Oh yay! I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed this recipe, Stephanie, and even more thrilled that you took the time to let me know. Thank you for making my day!
I would really love to make this recipe but I only have a 2 quart crockpot. Will this recipe fit if I cut it in half? Thanks a bunch!!
Hi Ashleigh, I’m excited to hear you’d like to make the Slow Cooker Loaded Potato Soup. I haven’t tried it in small batches. Our slow cooker is 4 quart, so I would think it should work to cut it in half. I think the only challenge would be how to cut the can of cream of celery soup and the can of chicken broth in half. If you try it, please leave another comment and let me know how it turns out!
Hi Carrie, I’m visiting from your feature at Making It In The Mountains. Love your boy’s castle playroom! When I saw this recipe, I had to come snatch it for my Pinterest Soup Board. This recipe is so happening in our house this winter! Congrats on the feature!
Hi Marie, thank you for coming over to say hello! I’m so glad you liked both the Castle Playroom and this recipe for Slow Cooker Loaded Potato Soup. 🙂 I really appreciate that you pinned it too. Hope you had a great weekend!
I’ve made this many times for my husband and I. I’ve cooked this as a double batch for a group before, it takes doubling very well. It’s delicious and really amazing on cold days. But it’s awesome any time of year. I always leave out the onions because I’m allergic to them.
Oh Chelsi, I’m so thrilled to hear you liked it enough to make it numerous times. You’ve totally made my day!
Came across this recipe today and it’s perfect for my leftover christmas ham! Gonna make it for tonite!!! Thank you
Oh fantastic! I hope you loved it, Buffy. Leftover Christmas ham is perfect for this soup!
So I made this today and my 8yr old picky (seriously) loved it! We all did! I added sharp cheddar at the end and it was mouth watering. Thanks Carrie!
Hooray! Hooray! I’m so happy to hear the soup was a big hit with your picky eater, Jennifer. Thanks for taking the time to let me know – you totally made my day!
I am making a double batch of this soup today and delivering some to older people in the neighborhood for Christmas. ?
Leanne,
I hope your neighbors loved the soup, but I’m sure what warmed their hearts most of all this Christmas was knowing they’re not alone. Thank you for being a beacon of kindness on Christmas Day and always. Merry Christmas!
Best wishes,
Carrie
