Make cute popsicle stick decor to welcome summer with a fun rainbow sign that’s easy to make using dollar store supplies.
Popsicle stick crafts for kids and adults are an easy boredom buster. I’m always looking forward to summer, so I thought these dollar store craft sticks were perfect for a DIY project. I’m Keri from One Mama’s Daily Drama and this month I’m sharing how to made this adorable DIY popsicle stick decor for your home!
Popsicle sticks are one of those crafts supplies that you probably already have stuffed in a closet somewhere. Add some craft paint and hot glue, and you’ve got an easy wall popsicle stick wall art to display anywhere in your home.
I hung mine to add a pop of color to my stereo cabinet. This would also look cute as a door sign or summer porch decor. Just make sure it’s protected from the weather if you hang it outdoors.
This popsicle stick craft is quick to make in about an hour (including dry time). Best of all, when the season is over, you can fold it up pretty small to store for next year.

- Wood craft sticks, aka popsicle sticks
- Craft paint – I used DecoArt Patio Paint because that’s what I already had on hand.
- Pencil
- Cotton macrame cord

What other popsicle stick signs can you make?
You can easily use this popsicle stick craft idea to make a sign for any season! Use pastel colors and write SPRING letters. Try jewel tones for autumn or shades of blue for winter.
Use your child’s favorite colors and spell out their name for a cute bedroom door sign. Attach the wooden squares horizontally instead of vertically to turn it into a banner – perfect for longer words like “happy birthday.”
Can you use Mod Podge on popsicle sticks?
I didn’t use Mod Podge on this craft, but you can paint a clear coat on your finished sign to seal it. This might help it hold up better if you’re hanging it outdoors or in direct sunlight where the weather might fade it. Mod Podge isn’t the best adhesive, so it won’t work to glue the sticks together.
How do you glue popsicle sticks together?
I used hot glue for this popsicle stick sign, but other craft glues should also work. Some may have a longer dry time than hot glue. Make sure your surface is clean and free from any wood dust. In my packages of popsicle sticks, a few were chipped and many were curved, so they were not usable for this craft.
How do you cut popsicle sticks?
If you’d like to cut your craft sticks, you can probably use a good pair of adult scissors. If yours are a bit thicker and that doesn’t work, you can use an x-acto knife to score along where you’d like to cut, then snap it. You may need to smooth rough edges with scissors or sandpaper.
Popsicle Stick Decor Summer Sign
Equipment
- 3 hot glue gun sticks
- 6 sponge paintbrushes 1-inch width
- 1 watercolor paintbrush small
- 1 Pair of scissors
Supplies
- 54 wooden craft popsicle sticks
- 7 bottles craft paint red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, white
- 1 pencil
- 7 feet cotton macrame cord
Instructions
- Make popsicle sticks into squares.To spell out summer, you’ll need to make 6 squares. For each square, lay out the popsicle sticks with 7 in a horizontal row, then place 2 on top perpendicular at opposite ends. Draw a line of glue down each side and attach the perpendicular sticks.
- Paint each popsicle stick square.Next, flip the squares over so the support sticks are on the back. Use a sponge brush to paint the front of each square. For the 6-square rainbow, I used red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. Set each square aside to dry and add a second coat of paint if necessary.
- Add a letter to each square.Use a pencil to lightly sketch out where each letter will go in the center of the painted side. There should be one letter for SUMMER on each of the 6 squares. Paint white over the letters using a small brush to get smooth edges. Add a second coat if necessary, then let the squares dry completely.
- Attach painted squares to cord.Measure a length of cord that is twice the length of your painted squares lined up, plus a bit extra. (My squares measure about 6-inches, so I used 7 feet of cord.) Line up the squares in order, spelling SUMMER from top to bottom, face down. Use dots of hot glue to attach the cord to the back side of each square, starting with the center of the cord at the top square.I recommend leaving about an inch of space between each square. You can trim extra cord from the end when it’s finished if it is too long.
- Hang the popsicle stick decor.Use a removable Command hook or similar for an easy way to hang the finished sign on a wall using the top loop.
